It's officially the dawn of a new era for the John Wick franchise. The next movie in the action franchise, Donnie Yen's Caine spinoff, has officially wrapped production.
Yen himself confirmed the news via Instagram, writing "That's a wrap!" alongside a photo from the set. Yen both directs and stars in the upcoming Caine movie, reprising the title role that he originated in John Wick: Chapter 4.
Caine began production in April. It is now possible the film, which does not yet have an official release date, could debut in 2027.
John Wick Spinoff Caine Wraps Filming
Along with Yen, Caine's ensemble cast includes Rina Sawayama, who will reprise her role as Akira Shimazu from John Wick: Chapter 4, and newcomers Mason Thames and Dacre Montgomery. Yen's Caine debuted in John Wick: Chapter 4 as a formidable assassin in The High Table's employ. Caine will explore what happens next for Caine after the game-changing events of John Wick: Chapter 4.
Yen is also infusing Caine with the style of some of his iconic martial arts movies, like Ip Man. He's working from a screenplay written by Mattson Tomlin.
“What drew me to Caine is the contradiction," Yen has said of the spinoff. "He carries love, responsibility, and sacrifice in a world built on consequence. That creates a very different kind of action hero. This film is an opportunity to push the genre forward. My goal is to create the most definitive martial arts-infused action film ever made, one that honors what audiences love about John Wick while bringing a new emotional depth and visual language to the story," he continued. "As both director and actor, I’m excited to shape this chapter in a way that reflects everything I’ve learned over decades in action cinema, while building something that feels entirely new.”
The John Wick Franchise Continues to Expand
Caine is just the latest expansion of the John Wick franchise. The first John Wick spinoff movie, Ballerina, starring Ana de Armas, opened in 2025, and performed respectably at the box office. The first John Wick television spinoff, the prequel series The Continental, was widely rejected by fans and disavowed by those involved with the franchise. Another John Wick streaming series, John Wick: Under the High Table, is in early development, while John Wick: Chapter 5 is also in the works. An animated John Wick prequel movie is also in development at Lionsgate.
“It became clear after John Wick: Chapter 4 that fans were particularly intrigued by Caine, which made his story the most natural next chapter of the franchise," Lionsgate Motion Picture Group chair Adam Fogelson has said of greenlighting the next John Wick spinoff. "It’s truly exciting to be embarking on a strategic partnership with Donnie—he has the vision to bring to life this extension of the John Wick universe in a way that’s authentic to his own signature style, flair, and expertise as a filmmaker.”
