John Kirby, an acting coach for films like The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe and Scream 4, has died at the age of 75. He died three years after being diagnosed with ALS, a neurodegenerative disease.
Kirby’s death was confirmed by Nathan Nesbitt when the news broke on social media. Nesbitt was Kirby’s acting manager and assistant for 22 years, Variety reported.
“I am here to officially, with a broken heart, announce the passing of our beloved John on the early morning hours of Wednesday, July 15, and it has been devastating for all of us, and we’re trying to just find a way to cope,” Nesbitt posted.
In an additional statement, Nesbitt highlighted the legacy Kirby has left.
“I can’t turn on a television or watch a film without recognizing someone John coached, mentored or influenced,” Nesbitt said. “His fingerprints are everywhere in this industry. His impact extends far beyond the performances we see on screen — it’s woven into the very fabric of Hollywood.”
Kirby’s acting coaching stretches across Disney and Universal Pictures. He coached celebrities like Jeff Bridges, Jim Caviezel, Hilary Duff and Alyson Stoner. He also coached Chrissy Metz, who paid tribute to Kirby on Instagram.
“My John. My mentor. My friend,” Metz posted. “My cheerleader when there was no chance of winning, my sounding board free of judgment, full of encouragement, and always from a deep place of love. I will never be able to thank you enough for believing in me. I will never get over your innate sense of intuition, every single time.”
Metz continued, saying that even in suffering, Kirby remained “a brilliant and selfless teacher who will continue to bring people together.”
“Your legacy will live on in every one of us, always,” she said. “Until we meet again… I miss you. I love you. ‘Take care.’”
Metz’s fans quickly took to her comment section to share their thoughts and prayers with her.
“He would be so proud knowing that you’re currently shining on the Broadway stage,” one user said.
“I am covering you and everyone was privileged to love John in my condolences and my prayers,” another said.
A celebration of life service will be held for Kirby and open to the public on Aug. 15 at 1 p.m. at the Hall of Liberty at Forest Lawn Hollywood Hills.
