Who knows what John Harbaugh might've said to Cam Skattebo privately about his failed backflip at a Fanatics Fest event over the weekend. But publicly, the first-year New York Giants head coach was cool as a cucumber.
"Dude, at least stick it. You know what I mean? Land the thing if you're gonna do it," Harbaugh said on the Bleav in Giants podcast.
Another less experienced coach might have taken that opportunity to scold his young running back for taking such an unnecessary risk on his way back from a gruesome lower leg injury suffered in October. Just to show people he's in control of a situation that delivered some bad press. Harbaugh could've done the same when Jaxson Dart and Abdul Carter feuded over Donald Trump too.
But while the 63-year-old might not necessarily relate to a Gen Zer who believes CTE is an "excuse," he knows how to pick his battles. And these aren't worth his energy. Not now, in the middle of July.
"I didn't have to do anything. I didn't say anything really," Harbaugh said on the Domonique Foxworth Show about the Dart-Carter situation. "The players said it. They laid the ground rules down for the guys and decided how it was going to be approached going forward."
The Skattebo situation isn't the same, but it's similarly the result of a young player doing immature things. So far, Harbaugh has proven to be the right person to handle these young players.
Everything that's wrong with Skattebo is everything that's right about him. As a coach, you don't want to kill that spirit before he even gets a chance to help you win games. You don't want him to question your commitment to him. Not over a backflip. Keep the conversations private and live to hopefully not backflip another day.
But because Harbaugh can't say it, I will. The backflip was stupid. It was stupid when Skattebo landed it at Brian Burns' celebrity softball game, and it was stupid when he didn't land it over the weekend. His assurances that he won't hurt himself before the season don't make anyone feel better about it.
I think I can speak for all Giants fans when I say please for the love of Lawrence Taylor and Tynes stop doing backflips. At least until we get to see you play again. You're making us nervous.
Napheesa Collier is back
The Minnesota Lynx already have the WNBA's best record and the likely Rookie of the Year, Olivia Miles. Now, they're about to add the back-to-back MVP runner-up to their lineup.
Listed as probable on the injury report, Napheesa Collier appears set to make her season debut today against the Seattle Storm. After the team's win Monday, Lynx guard Kayla McBride spoke about what Collier's return will mean:
"She's just a great basketball player, and it's every facet of the game. Whether it's rebounds, deflections, steals, scoring obviously. MVP type of player."
A scary team is about to get even scarier.
