Joe The Cat Dad Makes Good Gag About Cats Playing With Trash

Why always the dirty Q-tips?

We all know you can buy cats the latest and greatest in pet-toy technology just to watch them spend two hours playing inside and scratching at the box.

It's a tale as old as time, but it's a joke that never gets old, and this recent clip from Joe the Cat Dad on YouTube puts a fun spin on the familiar favorite.

A bit of audio from the 2004 comedy White Chicks is going viral: the dialogue in which Terry Crews takes one of the "sisters" out on a dinner date. The waiter asks, "And for the lady, perhaps a salad?" only to have the incognito Wayans brother order a steak smothered in onions, ribs, fries and more.

In Joe the Cat Dad's clip, it's translated as "And for Harley, perhaps a cat toy?" Of course, his kitty Harley has other plans.

"Perhaps not," the caption begins. "I'll have the Lululemon hair tie, rubber bands, Q-tips out of the trash, mom's knitting project, and the couch with lots and lots of repetition."

What makes it even better is that it's all paired with footage of Harley playing with those very items, so we get to see how cute of a goofball she really is.

"Oh god the dirty Q-tips," one commenter said. "Not clean fresh ones, they have to be used. I remember when mine suddenly discovered the thrill of digging them out of the bathroom trash. The trashcan is now in a high up place he can't reach."

"My boy Nemo loves Q-tips, hair ties, and pens/pencils," wrote another. "I swear he can hear the pen click from across the house."

"Nothing gets my cat going like a dollar pack of hair ties from Walmart," added another.

Why Do Cats Like Playing With Dirty Q-Tips?

You're not making it up. Everyone in the comments agrees, cats are weirdly attracted to dirty Q-tips! What's that about?

As gross as it sounds, cats are attracted to the scent of you on the cotton swab, as well as the proteins and fatty acids in the wax itself. That mixture triggers their hunting instincts, and because the Q-tip itself is lightweight and bounces around when pawed, it becomes a nice little plaything to take the part of a small rodent or would-be prey.

Of course, it's very important that your cat doesn't ingest any part of the cotton swab, because small pieces can get caught in their throat or hurt their mouth. If your cat is really getting into the trash, it's best to buy a can with a lid to keep them out, and provide plenty of crinkle and squeaky toys to indulge that hunting instinct more safely.

Of course, even after you buy that crinkle toy, the cat will want to play with the packaging!
