Jennifer Lawrence and Bella Hadid made ballet sneakers a cool-girl staple—I'm eyeing these 8 picks

They’re a no-brainer for summer.

They’re a no-brainer for summer.

Best Adidas Ballet Sneakers

Hot take: I hate flats, especially on harsh NYC pavement. I’m also 5 feet tall, so I prefer a cushy outsole that separates my feet as far from the ground as possible. Still, my sneakers can feel way too heavy in the humidity and heat, and open-toe sandals aren’t the smartest option in mucky subway stations.

The ideal in-between? Ballet sneakers—which took months before celebrities like Jennifer Lawrence, Bella Hadid, Nicole Kidman, and every cool girl on the street ultimately sold me on the massive trend. They’re breathable, practical, supportive, and turn any thrown-together outfit into a look. I’ve since tested two comfy pairs from Adidas this summer, with several more on my radar from the brand’s irresistible “balletcore” edit.

I initially dipped my toe into the ballet sneaker trend with the Tokyo Mary Jane Shoes, and, long story short, I wore them so much that there was ample justification to expand my collection. They’re lightweight and slim, much like Adidas’ best-selling silhouettes, with a tongue-less upper that keeps my feet cool on hot summer days. The stretchy, hook-and-loop top straps make slipping them on and off so easy, too.

Most recently, I’ve fallen in love with my Taekwondo Mei Ballet Shoes, one of the most viral styles to spark the trend. Their supple leather uppers make them closer to a typical ballet flat, while durable rubber outsoles and arch support make them a far more practical option for strenuous walking. They also come with ribbon-like laces that allow you to switch up the styling.

Calling all Samba fans! Check out this Mary Jane-style twist. This popular pick is the quintessential sneaker-dress-shoe hybrid for work, weekends, and everything in between. They’re “easy to pair with almost any outfit,” according to many repeat shoppers, and “feel like you’re wearing clouds on your feet.”

Next on my wishlist are the Barreda Mary Jane Shoes, especially in this adorable powder blue color option. Featuring elastic criss-cross straps and chic suede uppers, they feature grippy rubber outsoles and Adidas’s Cloudfoam cushioning, which several shoppers attest is “comfortable for all-day walking.” One person noted that they’re a great pick for wide feet, too.

I’m calling it: the Stan Smith Lo Ballet Shoe will be the next ‘it’ style on the block, likely because they’re nearly sold out in every color option. The style is so sleek and minimal—almost reminiscent of designers like The Row—with a luxurious leather silhouette, contrasting collar trims, and slim Mary-Jane straps. Fans rave that they’re “super soft” and “easy to pack,” with one saying, “My feet felt great after hours of wearing them” while standing and dancing at a concert.
