The "Hoopin' N Hollerin'" podcast isn't shy about drifting beyond what happens on the hardwood. Recently, it, in fact, wandered pretty far from it. Co-host Rone kicked things off by bringing up the "great advice" Jason Williams had given him a while back about making the bed. Do it badly enough that your wife loses confidence and just takes over completely.
From there, the conversation moved in a different direction. Rone asked if J-Will had ever heard of pink jobs and blue jobs around the house. The former NBA point guard hadn't. Once he got the gist of it, though, he had plenty to say.
J-Will evaluates household gender roles
Rone picked it up on "TikTok." During the discussion, the Philadelphia native explained the concept, which he traced back to the 20th century.
Blue household jobs, he explained, cover taking out the trash, driving, taking care of a bug in the house and handling home maintenance. They also include finances, logistics, travel, defense, and technology. Then there's assembling furniture or repairing electronics.
Pink household jobs?
They lean more toward laundry and cooking. Meal prep falls into that category. So does cleaning and child care. Then there's emotional labor. Sending birthday cards. Buying thoughtful gifts. Staying in touch with family.
As for Williams, he didn't even wait for his co-host's full explanation. There was one thing he wanted to know right away. Point blank, White Chocolate asked, "What color is the role that the mf bread is brought into the crib?"
For Rone, it falls under blue. J-Will seemed to agree based on the question itself. The 2006 NBA champion later added during the segment that he was the one in his relationship who was "working."
J-Will's "diplomatic" side
A 2024 survey from Ireland, published by "Aviva," looked into it. The takeaway?
At home, men handle most of the gutter clearing. Unclogging the drain, too. Women, meanwhile, are still more likely to do the laundry. Making the bed and cooking fall closer to shared ground. On that point, both Rone and J-Will said they do it from time to time.
As for answering the door, Williams said he's fine with that too.
Still, he's not a fan of those labels. To the 12-year NBA veteran, the lines continue to blur anyway.
"You can throw all that s—t out the window, bro, cuz you know as good as anybody, if you have a newborn baby today and you ain't trying to change a diaper as a man, you might as well get your a— up out of the house, bro," he emphasized.
Where White Chocolate does draw a line, though, is here. If there's a clear split, it should stay that way. He shouldn't suddenly be expected to handle it daily. Still, if it helps his family, the 1998 draft pick said he doesn't mind doing anything.
Rone, hearing that, joked it was a surprisingly "diplomatic" stance from his co-host. That likely traces back to some of J-Will's past takes.
Some view those as old school. Others see them as something closer to exclusionary. Those mixed reactions showed up, for example, when Williams criticized Jared McCain. For him, it's simply a no-go that the Oklahoma City Thunder guard is painting his nails and twerking, stating, "Boys ain't supposed to do that."
