Celebrity chef Jamie Oliver usually keeps things simple. His first cooking show, "The Naked Chef," celebrated the power of "stripped down" cooking using primarily pantry staples. He still advocates for uncomplicated cooking, and in a recent interview, he shared the easiest pancake recipe, which he says "works every single time." This recipe is one you probably don't need to write down—it's that simple.

Jamie Oliver's 3-Ingredient Pancake Recipe

In an Instagram interview, Oliver gives the ingredients for what he calls "One Cup Pancakes." You'll only need three ingredients:

  • 1 cup self-rising flour
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 egg

How To Make Self-Rising Flour

Mix 1 cup all-purpose flour, 1 1/2 teaspoons baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt in a small bowl with a fork or a whisk until well combined.

In a YouTube video demonstrating the recipe, he calls these "foolproof pancakes." To cook them, he greases a preheated skillet with butter, ladles in the batter until the pancake is the desired size, and cooks it on one side until bubbles form on the surface. Then he lifts the pancake slightly to make sure it's ready before flipping it.

After flipping the pancake, he spreads butter on the cooked side as it finishes cooking—a genius move that ensures every inch of the pancake is covered in glorious melted butter.

"Been using his method for years, never fails," said one commenter on Instagram. "Perfect pancakes every time." Another wrote, "Made it...amazingly delicious with butter and maple syrup. Use any cup...mug...teacup…same equal measurements...simple."

How To Customize Jamie Oliver's Foolproof Pancakes

There are endless possibilities for putting your own spin on these pancakes. You can make a thinner batter—one that results in a more crêpe-like texture—simply by increasing the amount of milk until it reaches your desired consistency.

In the video, Oliver says the finished pancake is now ready to be served sweet or savory. Here are some ideas for serving it either way.

Sweet:

  • Mix fresh berries or sliced bananas into the batter, or use them as a topping.
  • Sprinkle chocolate chips over the batter immediately after pouring it into the pan.
  • Top with whipped cream and fresh strawberries.
  • Slather the warm pancakes with hazelnut spread.
  • Finish with a sprinkle of cinnamon and brown sugar.

Savory:

  • Add crumbled, cooked bacon to the batter.
  • Cook the pancakes thin, crêpe-style, then top with diced ham and Gruyère or Swiss cheese. Let the cheese melt, then fold the pancakes into halves or quarters.
  • Use the pancakes instead of an English muffin to make a version of Eggs Benedict
  • Top with salsa and guacamole.
