Jack Dorsey's Block launches a decentralized chat tool to take on Slack.

Block, Inc. (NYSE: XYZ), the Bitcoin (BTC)-centric financial technology company founded by Jack Dorsey, launched a new platform called Buzz on July 21.

Built on the Nostr protocol, Buzz is a free, decentralized, and open-source platform where employees and artificial intelligence (AI) agents share the same workspace that aims to reduce our dependency on Slack and GitHub, the company said.

Buzz is like a modern team chat tool that puts channels, threads, direct messages, and media sharing into a single place. It is a model-agnostic and agent-agnostic model in which AI agents powered by any large language model (LLM), including Anthropic's Claude Code, OpenAI's Codex, and Block's goose, can be deployed, Block said.

AI agents active in Buzz can hold cryptographic identities, post and review code, run approved automated actions, and engage with real people in one workspace.

Thomas Petersen, a principal designer and AI strategist at the company, revealed that Block built the Buzz platform itself with AI agents.

"Fun fact, the entire platform was built with agents including the UI design which was more sculpted over time than designed up front."

Dorsey's Block embraces decentralized Bitcoin

Founded in 2009, Block has integrated Bitcoin, the world's first decentralized cryptocurrency, into several of its products:

  • Cash App, a wallet allowing Bitcoin investing
  • Bitkey, a self-custody Bitcoin hardware wallet
  • Proto, a Bitcoin mining system
  • Square, a point-of-sale system launching Bitcoin integration soon

Dorsey himself is a strong Bitcoin believer and has once even said that if he weren't working on his other ventures, he would be working on Bitcoin.

During an interview in May 2024, he predicted that Bitcoin's price will hit at least $1 million in 2030.
