The grueling work ethic, discipline, and mental strength required to battle overstimulating day-to-day activities as a professional athlete can sometimes feel like a Sisyphean task, given the heavy toll it takes on one's body and mind.
Media scrutiny, physical preparation, strict schedules and constant travel, among other activities, are the most stressful things players have to deal with. Aside from the daily tasks and social aspects the game brings, it also has a fair share of political aspects that can get in the way of their performance on the court, which happened to CJ McCollum at an early stage in his career.
Specifically, CJ got into heated debates with referees during games, resulting in numerous technical fouls that ultimately hurt his bank account.

During their officiating careers, referees develop a certain opinion of most players' attitude in the league, which can get in the way of their duties.

For McCollum, who was entering the league as a young prospect hungry for success, he was willing to do anything to offer his family the best life possible, even if it meant arguing with every official he could.
"I used to get technicals all the time. And my mom would say, 'Why are you getting technicals? It's $2,500. If you want to do that, just give me the money,'" CJ explained.
"I would say, 'Mom, you don't understand. The technical isn't just because I'm mad in the moment. It's sending a message to the referee to let him understand that, I know you're going to make mistakes, but this is our job. This is our livelihood. This is how I provide for my family.' You can't make certain types of mistakes; percentages and possessions matter."
Although players can't control their anger and are damaging their reputation, sometimes they're just trying to protect their integrity and send a message to the opposition.
CJ's work ultimately paid off
Nevertheless, McCollum's fierce energy and willingness to make the most of his God-given ability came back to him in the best way possible, as his peers respect him for his game and professionalism. Through his signature hard work and talent, CJ armed himself with $300 million projected career earnings and became one of the more respected individuals in the NBA.
Notably, CJ served as president of the National Basketball Players Association from 2021 to 2025, during which he remained a member of the union, and he has since transitioned into an advisory role. Aside from negotiating contracts, McCollum is keen on protecting the rights of all NBA players and expressing his voice through various media outlets.
