Apple released the fourth developer beta of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27 on Monday, two weeks after the third beta went out.
The update is now available in Settings under General, then Software Update, for anyone enrolled in the developer program.
One of the more practical changes coming to everyday users in iOS 27 involves speed. Apple has built performance improvements into this version of iOS that affect how quickly apps open, how fast AirDrop sends files, and how responsive the keyboard feels when you tap into a text field.
Older iPhones are specifically included in those gains, which means people who have not upgraded their hardware in a few years will still notice a difference when iOS 27 ships publicly this fall.
Siri Gets a Fundamental Overhaul
The version of Siri arriving with iOS 27 works differently than any previous iteration. Apple is calling it Siri AI, and it functions more like a conversational assistant along the lines of ChatGPT than the command-based Siri most users have experienced for years.
It draws on general knowledge, pulls context from personal apps like Messages and Mail, and reads what is currently on your screen to answer questions or complete tasks without requiring precise phrasing.
Siri AI also gets its own standalone app, giving conversations a persistent home rather than the floating overlay that disappears after each interaction.
A new Write with Siri tool is available across the entire system, letting users generate text or get feedback on something they have already written from any app that accepts typed input.
Visual Intelligence Moves Into the Camera App
Visual Intelligence, the feature that lets an iPhone identify objects, text, and surroundings through the camera, has moved into the Camera app itself and now operates through a Siri mode rather than its previous location. For most users, that means less hunting through menus to access it.
Apple Intelligence features have also expanded across Photos, Safari, Shortcuts, Wallet, and Passwords.
The changes to Photos and Passwords, in particular, reflect how Apple is pushing AI-assisted tools into the apps people use most frequently in a normal day.
Liquid Glass Gets a Transparency Slider
iOS 27 also refines the Liquid Glass visual design Apple introduced earlier this year. Users will now have a slider to control how transparent interface elements appear, giving more direct control over the look of the operating system without needing to switch between preset accessibility options.
Apple also improved how Liquid Glass renders, which should reduce some of the visual inconsistencies reported in earlier betas.
The phone also handles network switching more reliably in iOS 27, moving between Wi-Fi and cellular connections more smoothly to reduce the dropped-connection moments that have frustrated users in areas with inconsistent coverage.
iOS 27 is expected to reach the general public in September alongside new iPhone hardware.
