The Indianapolis Colts are entering a pivotal season under Shane Steichen. The Colts’ head coach had a strong debut season, leading Indianapolis to nine wins. But he’s produced back-to-back eight-win campaigns, and now he could be on the hot seat.

Sure, the Colts, at times, looked like the NFL’s best team, but that was before Daniel Jones tore his Achilles tendon. The question is, can the Colts return to the elite level they were playing at after getting out to a 7-1 start a year ago?

Colts Reporter Urges Jonathan Taylor to Hold Out

While Jones is working his way back from such a serious lower leg injury, it’s possible he won’t be back to 100% by the start of the season. It’s also possible he’ll be healthy enough to start, but not confident enough in his surgically repaired Achilles to truly cut loose on the field.

If so, the Colts could find themselves relying on All-Pro running back Jonathan Taylor more than ever. After all, the Colts will need to run their offense through someone, and Taylor has proven he can be an effective workhorse.

Yet, one reporter, The Athletic‘s James Boyd, suggested that Taylor should use this leverage as an opportunity to hold out from his contract.

The 27-year-old Taylor is entering the final year of his three-year, $42 million contract. If the Colts already know they want him to be part of their future, past this upcoming season, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to reward him for the work he’s already done, plus what’s to come.

It doesn’t have to be a long extension; even a two-year deal would be better than what Taylor is working with now, and it may be a good way to make everyone happy. Yet, there’s been no indication that Taylor is preparing to hold out this time around either.
