An Illinois man was charged with first-degree murder after prosecutors alleged he recorded a seven-hour attack on his former girlfriend before fatally strangling her, Wonderwall.com can report.

Kevin Motykie, 56, is accused of killing 43-year-old nurse Katherine Torbick inside her Schaumburg, Ill., home on April 30.

Prosecutors allege investigators recovered an audio recording device from his pocket that captured much of what unfolded inside the residence, including torture.

Authorities said officers responded to Torbick’s home after someone she had recently begun dating called 911 requesting a welfare check because he had been unable to reach her throughout the day, according to CBS News.

Schaumburg police were already familiar with the address because Motykie had an outstanding arrest warrant stemming from an earlier alleged domestic violence case involving Torbick.

When officers forced their way inside the home, they found Torbick dead on a couch with visible signs of trauma, according to WGN-TV. Motykie was located in the garage and taken into custody.

True Crime News reported he appeared unsteady on his feet and had trouble speaking after allegedly taking lorazepam and hydrocodone.

Court records reportedly show Motykie had already been accused of attacking Torbick weeks before her death. In March, Torbick fled to a neighbor’s home seeking help after an alleged assault. She later told authorities Motykie forced her to write what was described as a suicide note to her 12-year-old son, according to WFLD.

Torbick also gave investigators a videotaped statement in which she said she feared Motykie would kill her, CBS News reported. She also filed a felony complaint following the alleged attack.

Court records also indicate Motykie had previously been the subject of three separate orders of protection sought by three different people.

Court documents allege the audio device found in Motykie’s pocket captured nearly seven hours of what unfolded inside the home, beginning around 2 a.m. on April 30.

Prosecutors said the recording allegedly captured Motykie accusing Torbick of cheating as she repeatedly denied the claims and pleaded with him to stop hurting her. They further allege the audio documented hours of physical and sexual assaults before Torbick was ultimately strangled to death.

True Crime News reported that according to authorities, before Motykie allegedly killed her, he said, “This will take 30 seconds, think of somewhere happy.”

According to prosecutors, Motykie and Torbick dated for about a decade before breaking up earlier this year.

Torbick had worked as a nurse for 21 years. Following her death, her current employer, Fox River MedSpa, remembered her as a beloved member of the team.

“We are heartbroken by the loss of our teammate and friend, Kat Torbick,” the company wrote in a statement.

The MedSpa added that “In the short time she was with us, she became a part of our sisterhood. She brought warmth, energy, and genuine care to our workplace. She loved being part of this team, and we loved having her here.”

Motykie remains jailed on first-degree murder and multiple criminal sexual assault charges.
