Navigating the delicate balance of attention among children is one of the hardest parts of motherhood. When one child requires extra medical care, feelings of sibling jealousy can easily bubble to the surface. But how a parent handles that resentment makes all the difference.

True fairness isn’t about making sure every child gets the exact same slice of pie; it is about meeting each child’s unique needs with grace and compassion. Unfortunately, one mother missed the mark entirely when she tried to appease her healthy daughters by committing an act of breathtaking cruelty against her terminally ill teenager.

The Incident

The mother in question has three daughters: Taylor (18), Ava (17), and Kate (12). Ava has a terminal illness and has been battling it for seven years, defying a grim five-year life expectancy. Once a month, Ava endures a grueling six-hour hospital infusion.

To make the dreadful day a little brighter, her mother stops at Ava’s favorite restaurant for cheeseburgers and onion rings before the needle goes in. Because the hospital is two hours away and the treatments leave Ava dizzy and nauseous, bringing food back in the car for the other siblings simply isn’t an option.

Naturally, Taylor and Kate began complaining that it wasn’t fair that Ava got to eat at the restaurant without them. Instead of using this as a teaching moment to explain that a pre-hospital burger is hardly a luxury, the mother agreed with her healthy daughters. Her solution? She took Taylor and Kate to that exact restaurant for a fun meal and deliberately left Ava at home to “make it fair.”

When Ava called her father in tears, he was rightfully outraged. He flooded his wife’s phone with messages, telling her she “can’t leave Ava out just because she’s sick” and that it “hurts her feelings that we excluded her.” To make matters worse, the mother later confessed-only because her husband forced her to add the detail-that she already spends almost every weekend hiking, running, and biking with her healthy daughters while Ava stays home.

The Internet Reacts

The public response was swift and merciless, with readers utterly appalled by the mother’s lack of empathy.

The “Absolutely Not” crowd was quick to point out the absurdity of the healthy sisters’ jealousy. One commenter perfectly captured the outrage: “You deliberately left your daughter at home, just because the other two are jealous. Jealous of what exactly, that their sister gets one treat before being injected and then feeling nauseous all day?”

Another user pointed out the sheer entitlement of the healthy siblings, advising the mother, “Don’t make them into entitled .ssh.l.s. Fair is NOT always equal.”

A few empathetic souls played “Devil’s Advocate” to try and understand the youngest sibling’s perspective. One reader noted that a 12-year-old might lack the maturity to grasp the gravity of the situation. “She just sees her older sister getting mom to herself all day once a month vs. her just getting a few hours a week,” they explained.

However, even these gracious defenders drew a hard line at the 18-year-old and the mother, agreeing that the adults in the room should absolutely know better.

The harshest critics didn’t hold back, with many questioning the mother’s character and hoping the husband takes drastic action. “Oh how I’d love for everyone to know at the funeral that instead of being there for her and making sure she had a happy life, her mother and sisters excluded her from everything,” one furious reader wrote, adding, “g.dd.mn this lady is pure evil.”

Another was quick to emphasize the physical toll on the sick teen, writing, “Not only that, the injection takes six f.ck.ng hours.” Several readers urged the father to leave, with one stating, “I’m glad her husband has some backbone… she’s literally writing off her dying child.”

The Etiquette Verdict

As a society, we judge our character by how we treat the most vulnerable among us-especially within our own families. This mother failed the most basic test of maternal etiquette and human decency. The Golden Rule of parenting is that fair does not mean equal; it means providing each child with what they need to thrive.

A sick child receiving a mandatory meal before a grueling medical procedure is a necessity, not a luxury to be envied. Parents must teach their healthy children gratitude and perspective, rather than rewarding petty jealousy with exclusionary outings. When a child is living on borrowed time, every single memory matters.

Your Thoughts

Was this mother just trying to keep the peace and validate her healthy daughters, or was her decision to leave her sick child at home completely unforgivable?
