My phone can see heat now.

I have this weird habit of buying phone accessories that promise to do something interesting. USB-C microphones, DACs, digital microscopes — I’ve mostly tried most of the weird accessories you can plug into a phone’s charging port.

I recently bought a thermal camera — Thermal Master P3 — on a whim because it was on sale, and it’s now the one accessory that keeps giving me new reasons to pick it up.

Finding overheating electronics before they fail

Heat that stands out is heat worth investigating

Electronics don’t always give you obvious warning signs before failing. A dying capacitor, a bad solder joint, a bloated battery — all these could run hot for weeks before anything actually goes wrong. And by the time you smell burning, the damage may already be done.

So the first thing I used my thermal camera for was to check all my electronic devices. I waved it across my desk to check the laptop, CPU, TV, and phones — just to see what was going on. The hottest thing turned out to be my power strip. I even used to check my PS5 while gaming and the router since it runs 24/7.

Unlike a temperature gun, the thermal camera gives you a heat map, so you can tell exactly which part is running hot. And the number that matters here isn’t absolute but the delta. If everything is running at 45°C, that’s probably fine. But if one thing is at 70°C while everything around is at 40°C, then it’s usually worth investigating.

Seeing plumbing leaks without tearing the home apart

Find those hidden water leaks

I know thermal cameras aren’t X-ray tools for detecting water inside walls or ceilings, but they can still help. They can detect temperature differences caused by the moisture: wet drywall or a sweating pipe behind a wall will show up cooler than everything around it, and that contrast is usually enough to flag something.

You can run the camera across the walls and ceilings in bathrooms, kitchens, and anywhere pipes run. You just have to look for cool patches that have no business being there — those irregular blobs of blue or purple that don’t match the surrounding surface.

The only catch is that the temperature difference needs to be there for this work. If it’s the same as everything else around, you’ll see nothing. Of course, there are better ways to detect leaks, but a thermal camera is a great starting point.

Diagnosing HVAC problems

That’s one way to keep those energy bills low

A thermal camera can’t fix your AC or heater, but it can tell you a lot about how they’re doing. For instance, they can easily spot clogged filters — restricted airflows usually cause temperature variances that show up clearly in a scan. Scanning along ducts can reveal where conditioned air is escaping.

It can also help spot a failing evaporator coil. One that’s icing up will show a sharp cold signature where there shouldn’t be one, and uneven temperature distribution across the coil is often an early sign of refrigerant problems.

You can use the thermal camera for checking home insulation too. A quick scan of window frames, doors, and joints can reveal leaks you’d otherwise never notice. Again, a thermal camera can’t see through the wall, but it can pick up those temperature differences that tell you all you need to know.

Using a thermal camera was easier than I thought

Plug in, point, and pay attention

When I first bought the thermal camera, I honestly expected a learning curve because I hadn’t tried anything like it before. But it turned out to be quite straightforward. All I had to do was plug it into my phone’s USB-C port, download its app, and I was scanning within minutes.

The color mapping does most of the work here. Hot areas show up in yellow and white, cooler areas in purple and blue. It automatically detects the temperature differences between nearby objects and surfaces and shows them, so there’s not much to do here other than pay attention. You can even lock the temperature range, switch color palettes, and capture images if you want to go deep.

Beyond the obvious use cases we just talked about, a thermal camera can be useful for a lot of other things, like checking for animal activity when camping, inspecting your car’s battery, scanning solar panels for potential failures, and even cooking. Some of it is practical, some of it is just interesting. At this point, I carry it more out of curiosity than necessity.
