Hunter Biden claimed there is a “closeted gay mafia” of Republicans in Washington, D.C., arguing that years of suppressing their sexuality have left some GOP lawmakers with “blackened hearts.”

Speaking on the I’ve Had It podcast, Biden said what he called the nation’s “closettocracy” poses a greater problem than the “oligarchy,” contending that closeted Republicans project their own internal struggles onto others.

“I believe that the biggest problem in America is not the oligarchy. It’s the closettocracy,” Biden said. “Everybody knows there is a closeted gay mafia, largely Republican, that exists in Washington, D.C.”

Biden said he was speaking from decades of experience around the nation’s political establishment, noting that he spent much of his life in Washington while his father served as senator, vice president, and president.

“I lived there for 20 years,” Biden said. “My dad was a senator, vice president, president. Everybody knows every single one of them who’s gay.”

Biden argued that the significance of the alleged network stems from what he described as the psychological effects of remaining in the closet.

“I believe that internal conflict creates so much vitriol inside a person that they take it out on the rest of the world,” he said. “Their whole lives they’ve been closeted, so you have this black ball inside yourself, this blackened heart, because you can’t be who you want to be. And so you take it out on everybody else.”

During the interview, Biden also asserted that “everybody knows” Sen. Lindsey Graham was gay. The North Carolina Republican, who died earlier this month, never publicly identified as gay and has repeatedly declined to address speculation about his personal life.

The comments during a wide-ranging interview in which Biden also criticized Democrats' response to President Donald Trump, blasted former Attorney General Merrick Garland, and reflected on his addiction, legal troubles, and years in the political spotlight.
