Hunter Biden said there is a “closeted gay mafia, largely Republican, that exists in Washington, D.C.” during an appearance on Jennifer Welch’sI’ve Had It” podcast over the weekend, adding that everyone in the capital knows exactly who those men are. He called the arrangement a closetocracy and told Welch he considers it one of the biggest problems in the country.

Biden framed the claim around his own vantage point, noting he lived in Washington for two decades and spent 54 years as the son of a senator, then a vice president, then a president. He said he had made versions of the joke before and that people always laughed, but that he was being serious this time.

His argument was not simply that these men exist. It was about what he believes concealment does to a person. Biden said the internal conflict of a life spent hidden produces enough vitriol that the person turns it outward on everyone else, describing a kind of blackened heart formed by never being able to live as who you are. The closeted gay mafia matters, in his telling, only because he sees that suppression driving the politics these men then practice on everybody outside the closet.

Welch was the one who introduced a name into the conversation. She said Lindsey Graham, and Biden agreed. That sequence is worth noting because much of the clip circulating on social platforms has been framed as Biden volunteering the name himself.

Graham, the South Carolina Republican who served in the Senate from 2003 until his death on July 11, was the subject of speculation about his private life for most of his political career. He never publicly identified as gay and consistently declined to engage with the rumors. He died 10 days before Biden’s remarks began circulating and is not in a position to respond to them. Several outlets covering the story, including Attitude and the Washington Examiner, have incorrectly described him as a North Carolina senator.

Beyond agreeing with Welch on Graham, Biden did not name anyone else, and he did not offer documentation, sourcing or firsthand accounts to support the broader claim. He rested it on the assertion that this is common knowledge in Washington among people who have been there long enough.

Democrats can’t stop Kamala Harris — and it’s got the GOP giddy

There are only two lanes to the Democratic presidential nomination two years from now, and one of them is already blocked — by Kamala Harris. Get ready for the Kamala comeback, followed, in all likelihood, by a replay of her crushing defeat by the Republican nominee. Believe it or not, the ex-VP occupies what counts as the “center lane” within the party, and for most of the last three decades that’s the one that’s led to the nomination....
