It seems like everything is always changing when it comes to airport security. Shoes off or on? Laptops out or in? Hands up or down? Even I, a frequent flier, find myself inquiring about the rules these days.

And as a seasoned traveler, I’ve largely surrendered to the process. Between TSA PreCheck, Global Entry, and Clear—a private company that already has my fingerprints and retinal scans on file—I’ve not thought twice about having my photo taken at the airport. But as the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) expands its facial comparison technology across airports nationwide, not every traveler is as comfortable handing over another piece of biometric data. According to the TSA, the technology enhances security while helping passengers move through checkpoints more efficiently. For some, that’s a welcome trade-off. For others, the idea of having their face scanned before boarding raises questions about privacy, consent, and exactly what happens to that information once it’s collected.

IDEMIA, an authorized TSA service provider that developed the Credential Authentication Technology (CAT) system at airport checkpoints, also helped create the current facial recognition technology used today. This is designed to speed up wait times at airports while maintaining safety—an especially important benefit at high-volume hubs where both efficiency and safety are critical.

“Facial comparison technology today is used in the security flow when a traveler presents their ID before moving into security screening. Through programs supported by partners like IDEMIA Public Security, this step is becoming more seamless, while still feeding into the same trusted screening process travelers are familiar with,” says Lisa Shoemaker, IDEMIA Public Security spokesperson.

What is TSA facial recognition technology?

At participating airports, TSA’s facial comparison technology compares a live photo taken at the security checkpoint and with the image on a traveler’s identification document, whether a passport or a driver’s license. The goal is simple: Verify the person standing in front of the officer matches the ID being presented.

IDEMIA, Shoemaker says, plays a role in enabling that secure identity verification, helping ensure the process is both accurate and efficient. TSA notes that once the verification process is complete, the photo is deleted from the system. “In standard operations, images are deleted immediately after the identity check is complete and are not stored,” Shoemaker adds.

However, the system isn’t perfect, and if a match is not found, TSA agents are taught to fall back on the older process of a standard manual ID check. This same process is used if people choose to opt out.

“The goal is to add convenience, not create friction, so there is always a clear backup path,” Shoemaker says. “Participation continues to be voluntary, and travelers can opt out at any time and proceed with a traditional ID check. Transparency and traveler choice are core to how these solutions are designed and deployed.”

How does the technology use your photo?

Arun Ross, a Martin J. Vanderploeg endowed professor and biometrics expert at Michigan State University, explains that, according to the TSA, the purpose is identity verification, not surveillance, and that the photo taken is no more invasive than that on your driver’s license; in fact, it may be less so.

“A digital image of our face is already present in the passport or identification document. Face images captured by state DMVs—to comply with the federal Real ID Act requirements—are already stored in secure state databases. In contrast, the face photo being collected at the TSA checkpoint is for identity verification purposes only and not stored,” he says.

While the technology raises privacy questions for some travelers, experts say automated facial comparison systems can improve accuracy and efficiency. “From a security perspective, automated facial comparison technology enhances airport security,” says Michael King, Ph.D., professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at Florida Institute of Technology. “In the traditional process, TSA agents bear the heavy burden of verifying the identity of a person they have never seen before by comparing the person’s face to a relatively small photo on a document.”

King notes that while TSA officers have performed this task successfully for years, automated systems do not experience fatigue and can apply the same verification process consistently throughout the day.

Ross points out no biometric system is perfect, though false non-matches are uncommon. “Like all biometric systems, facial recognition technology is not perfect,” he says. “However, the chances of a false non-match are extremely low.”

What should travelers know?

One of the biggest misconceptions, according to Ross, is many travelers assume the photo is mandatory simply because it occurs at a TSA checkpoint. “If a traveler is uncomfortable, they can always opt out of the process,” says King.

He also notes that travelers often confuse facial comparison technology at the TSA checkpoint with other applications of facial recognition throughout the travel journey, including border-entry systems and trusted traveler programs, which may operate under different rules and retention policies.

Ultimately, both Ross and King describe the immediate privacy risk associated with a single TSA facial scan as relatively low. However, if a traveler chooses to opt out, an early warning is best. Ross explains that travelers who prefer not to participate should indicate that choice before the image is captured. The TSA states that passengers who opt out can complete the traditional manual identity verification process instead and should not lose their place in line or face any penalties.

Both experts say they personally participate in the facial comparison process when traveling. “I have not opted out of this procedure,” says Ross. “Personally, I find it convenient. The privacy risk from a single TSA facial scan is low due to the TSA’s stated deletion policy.”

King shares a similar perspective. “I travel quite frequently, and I have never opted out of the process,” he says. “From a personal perspective, I enjoy the continued efficiency of not having to hand over as many physical documents to the TSA security team at the checkpoint.”

And, according to Shoemaker, there will be a further rollout across airports. She says, “You’ll continue to see an expansion of facial comparison technology and digital ID capabilities across more airports, with a focus on making the process faster and more seamless for travelers... IDEMIA is focused on delivering a smooth, efficient experience during peak travel periods.”
