Tour de France 2026 continues with Stage 17 today, a bumpy 174.7km ride from Chambéry in southeast France southwestwards to Voiron. Despite being described as "flat", the route crams in 2,400m of elevation gain, with the Côte de Rossillon (1.7 km at a 5.3%), Col des Prés (3.5km at 6.6%) and Cote de Saint-Jean d'Arvey (1.1km at 5.7%) standing as the biggest obstacles.
Jonas Vingegaard is conspicuous by his absence, having fractured his collarbone in a crash towards the end of Stage 15, when he was second in the GC standings behind only Tadej Pogacar. Vinge had been woken up at 2am on the day for a doping test. Pogacar was tested three hours later.
It was a cruel way for his race to end, and it means the 2026 edition of the Tour de France will be the first since 2020 not to end with Pogacar and Vingegaard on the top two steps of the podium. Florian Lipowitz, who finished third last year, has also dropped out after breaking his collarbone in a crash during Stage 16.
Olympic road and time trial champion Remco Evenepoel has filled the gap left by Vingegaard, albeit 4 minutes and 32 seconds off Pogacar's pace. Even now, however, Pogi won't be counting any chickens. This year's race always had the potential to be one for the ages, and not just because of the calibre of the Tour de France favourites. With extreme heat impacting proceedings like never before, teamwork is going to be vital across the final stretch.
Temperatures have been as high as 40 degrees Celsius for some stages, but they've cooled off of late and we're expecting things to top out at 30 degrees in Chambéry today.
It's almost impossible to contemplate Pogacar not breaking every major Tour de France record going, but with arch-rival Vingegaard and new kid on the block Paul Seixas each in superb touch for the 113th edition of La Grande Boucle, the reigning champion is going to have to bust a gut for it.
Aged 27, Pogacar already has four TdF titles to his name – only Jacques Anquetil, Eddy Merckx, Bernard Hinault and Miguel Indurain have won five. The Slovenian is on course not just to draw level with those four greats but, eventually, leave them in the dust. Mark Cavendish's record haul of 35 stage victories is in his sights too.
Pogacar has won four Grand Tours despite regularly being at odds with the rest of his UAE Team Emirates XRG stablemates, but things have been different this time around, with youngster Isaac del Toro eager to play his part as he steps up his development. He's on track for a podium finish, but Paul Seixas has closed the gap behind him.
