As you watch the Tour de France, the camera shows the peloton gracefully rolling along. The picture is smooth, riders are talking, and everything looks almost civilized.

Then you look at the numbers.

Through Stage 15 of the 2026 Tour de France, race leader Tadej Pogačar had covered 2,471.5 kilometers in 55 hours, 41 minutes, and 31 seconds. Using the published stage distances and his general-classification time, that produces a provisional average of about 44.4 kilometers per hour, or 27.6 mph. Time bonuses make that a rough calculation rather than the Tour’s official average, but the scale of it is clear.

At 17 mph, a rider would need more than 90 hours to cover the same distance. That is nearly 35 additional hours in the saddle, assuming no traffic, no stop signs, no food stops, and no need to sleep.

Which, obviously, is not how any of this works.

The final 2026 average will probably fall. The Tour still has two finishes on Alpe d’Huez, including a Stage 20 with more than 5,600 meters (18,373 feet) of elevation gain. But even after three major mountain stages, the provisional pace remained well above the speed of any completed Tour.

The 2022 Tour remains the fastest finished edition, at 42.1 km/h (26.2 mph). The 2024 race averaged 41.8 km/h (26.0 mph), followed by the 2023 Tour at 41.4 km/h (25.7 mph). The 2005 edition averaged 41.1 km/h (25.5 mph).

There is no single “average cyclist,” of course. Terrain, wind, fitness, traffic, equipment, drafting, and whether the ride ends at a brewery can swing average speed wildly. The comparisons below are useful benchmarks, not definitions of normal.

But they make the point.

Average Speed on Flat Terrain

Average rider: 17 to 18 mph

Typical Tour peloton: 25 to 28 mph

Fastest 2026 road stage: 31.63 mph

Stage 11 from Vichy to Nevers was not merely fast. It was the fastest road stage in Tour de France history.

Søren Wærenskjold covered the 161.3-kilometer—or 100.2-mile—stage in 3 hours, 10 minutes, and 6 seconds. His average speed was 50.910 km/h, or 31.63 mph. The Tour credited a relatively short course, a tailwind, and an intense race scenario for helping produce the record.

A rider averaging 17 mph would need about 5 hours and 54 minutes to cover the same distance. Wærenskjold got there roughly 2 hours and 44 minutes sooner.

He was not riding alone. The peloton provides substantial aerodynamic shelter, and riders can save considerable energy when positioned properly inside it.

That does not make traveling in the peloton easy.

The draft only helps when you can hold the wheel, respond to accelerations, move through the group, corner at speed, eat, drink, and avoid crashing while the road moves underneath you at more than 30 mph. Once a gap opens, the aerodynamic shelter disappears. Then the group vanishes with upsetting speed.

The 2023 version of this story put an average rider at 17 to 18 mph on flat terrain and a Tour pro at 25 to 28 mph. Those remain reasonable comparison points. Stage 11 showed what happens when modern equipment, favorable conditions, and a motivated peloton push past the upper end of that range.

Average Time-Trial Speed

Average rider: 19 to 20 mph

Winning 2026 Tour team: 33.52 mph

The 2026 Tour opened with a 19.6-kilometer team time trial through Barcelona. Visma–Lease a Bike finished in 21 minutes and 47 seconds, averaging 53.95 km/h, or 33.52 mph. The performance put Jonas Vingegaard into the first yellow jersey of the race.

A rider averaging 20 mph would need about 36 minutes and 30 seconds to cover the same distance—nearly 15 minutes longer.

This is an aggressively unfair comparison.

A team time trial is an aerodynamic relay. Riders rotate through the wind, take short pulls, and recover in the slipstream. The bikes, wheels, helmets, clothing, and rider positions are selected around one job: moving as quickly as possible against the clock.

But that unfairness is part of the lesson. Tour speed does not come from physiology alone. It is physiology multiplied by teamwork, equipment, preparation, course knowledge, and thousands of small decisions made well.

For an ordinary rider, holding 20 mph alone is fast. For a Tour team, it would be a mechanical problem, an obvious sign that something had gone catastrophically wrong.

How Long It Takes to Climb the Col du Tourmalet

Average rider: About 115 minutes

Tadej Pogačar in 2026: 43 minutes, 12 seconds

The Col du Tourmalet is one of cycling’s most famous reference points. It is long, high, and difficult enough that reaching its summit is the day’s achievement for most riders.

On Stage 6, the Tour climbed the 17.1-kilometer (10.6-mile) side from Sainte-Marie-de-Campan, which averages 7.3 percent. The complete stage covered 186.2 kilometers (115.7 miles) and included 4,100 meters (13,451 feet) of climbing.

Pogačar reached the summit in 43 minutes and 12 seconds, breaking the previous climbing record by more than two minutes. His average speed was approximately 23.7 km/h, or 14.7 mph.

The 2023 version of this story gave 115 minutes as a useful benchmark for an ordinary rider. Pogačar was 1 hour, 11 minutes, and 48 seconds faster.

And the Tourmalet was not the finish.

Pogačar attacked near the summit, crossed it alone, and continued for another 43 kilometers (26.72 miles). He descended into the valley, climbed to Gavarnie-Gèdre, and won the stage by 2 minutes and 38 seconds.

Most of us would ride the Tourmalet, take a summit photo, put on a jacket, and spend the next 20 minutes deciding whether we had earned two pastries or three.

How Fast Tour Riders Descend

There is no useful “average rider” number for descending.

Downhill speed depends on visibility, pavement, traffic, weather, familiarity with the road, bicycle condition, handling skill, and a rider’s willingness to accept consequences. A higher maximum speed is not automatically an achievement, and the Tour should not be treated as instruction.

Still, Pogačar’s descent from the Tourmalet provides another measure of how differently the best riders in the world move through terrain.

According to Strava data reported by L’Équipe, Pogačar averaged more than 72 km/h, or about 45 mph, during a roughly 12-minute portion of the descent. His maximum speed approached 100 km/h, or 62 mph.

Those figures are not goals for a Sunday ride.

Pogačar was racing on closed roads, had detailed information about the route, and possesses exceptional handling ability. But the combination is still difficult to comprehend: He climbed one of the Tour’s defining mountains at nearly 15 mph, descended it at highway speeds, and then continued racing uphill.

How Much Fuel Tour Speed Requires?

A 60- to 90-minute recreational ride: Zero to about 90 grams

The longest 2026 Tour stage: An estimated 370 to 494 grams

Going that fast also requires eating at a ridiculous rate.

Stage 13, the longest of the 2026 Tour, covered 205.8 kilometers (127.9 miles) with 2,400 meters (7,874 feet) of climbing. Mauro Schmid won in 4 hours, 6 minutes, and 58 seconds.

His feed log is not public, but at the 90 to 120 grams of carbohydrate per hour targeted by some Tour riders, that would equal approximately 370 to 494 grams during the stage—the carbohydrate equivalent of about 15 to 20 typical gels. Teams make that volume less grim by spreading it among drinks, chews, bars, rice cakes, and other foods.

An ordinary 60-minute ride may require little beyond water. For a harder 90-minute ride, 30 to 60 grams per hour, or 45 to 90 grams total, is plenty for most riders.

Tour riders train their guts to tolerate more. Do not turn Saturday’s group ride into a gastrointestinal experiment.

Why the Comparison Is Crooked

Tour pro versus ordinary cyclist is a fun comparison. It is also fundamentally crooked.

A recreational rider deals with intersections, traffic, rough pavement, navigation, clothing stuffed into pockets, and the occasional need to stop because the gas station has good doughnuts.

A Tour rider has closed roads, team cars, mechanics, carefully planned fueling, aerodynamic clothing, optimized equipment, course information, and a peloton that provides substantial protection from the wind.

Modern Tours are also faster because the riders train more specifically, eat more during stages, use more efficient equipment, and race shorter, more aggressive stages. Teams have better data and more staff positioned along the route, reducing many of the natural pauses that once slowed the peloton. Those subjects deserve their own explanation—and they already have one.

None of those advantages makes the Tour easy. They make the riders faster while requiring them to process more information, tolerate more risk, and repeat enormous efforts for three weeks.

Drafting only helps when you are strong enough to stay in the draft.

An aero bike only helps when you can still push the pedals.

Food only helps when your body can digest it while riding near its limit.

The Tour’s speed is not one miracle. It is the accumulated result of hundreds of smaller advantages, all exploited by riders with physiology most of us do not possess.

So, What Is the Tour de France Average Speed?

Through Stage 15 of the 2026 race, it is about 27.6 mph.

That number should fall before Paris. It also combines flat stages, mountain stages, time trials, descents, drafting, attacks, team tactics, and time bonuses. It does not mean Pogačar rolls out of his driveway and rides 27.6 mph every afternoon.

But it does explain why television can be misleading.

The peloton looks smooth because the best riders in the world are very good at making extreme speed appear normal. They are not wobbling. They are not staring at the computer in disbelief. They are eating, talking, changing clothing, collecting bottles, and planning what comes next.

Your 16- or 17-mph ride is not slow.

It is ordinary cycling.

The Tour is something else.
