The nation’s top track-and-field athletes will compete at Icahn Stadium on Randall’s Island this weekend for the USATF Outdoor Championships in the event’s return to New York City for the first time since 1991. This year also marks the 150th anniversary of the U.S. national track and field championships, which were held in the Bronx in 1876.
Without any major global championships to qualify for this year, some stars are skipping USAs to prioritize Diamond League competitions and the World Ultimate Championships. But winning a national title still means something in track and field, and there will still be plenty of firepower at the top competing for their chance to take home the gold.
Teammates Sha’Carri Richardson and Melissa Jefferson-Wooden will split events, with Richardson headlining the women’s 100 meters and Jefferson-Wooden the top seed in the women’s 200 meters. Richardson, the 2023 world champion over 100 meters, is looking to join Carmelita Jeter as the second woman to win three U.S. titles since 2000.
Jefferson-Wooden, the 2025 triple world champion who edged Richardson by one-hundredth of a second at the Pre Classic, is focusing on the longer event.
Rivals Noah Lyles and Kenny Bednarek will clash in the men’s 100 meters, with Lyles also racing for 200-meter gold. A different man has won this race at the past six national championships, with Lyles winning in 2018 and 2024 and Bednarek capturing gold in 2025.
The men’s 800 meters has quickly become one of the most competitive events in the United States, and teen phenom Cooper Lutkenhaus will race here for his first U.S. title versus reigning champion Donavan Brazier, also the 2019 world champion. The 17-year-old Lutkenhaus became the youngest-ever track and field world champion when he won world indoors in March. Brandon Miller, who defeated Lutkenhaus at the Pre Classic, will skip USAs to rehab an ankle injury, which leaves the door open for Lutkenhaus to claim his first outdoor title.
