Over the past few years, many low- or zero-calorie artificial sweeteners have hit the market as guilt-free alternatives to refined sugar, free from its blood sugar spikes and calories. But as Science Daily reports, new forward-looking research and clinical studies published in Neurology are raising pressing concerns about the long-term effects of these synthetic compounds on cellular health and longevity.
But while it may seem like a side-effect-free substitute for sugar, a growing body of scientific evidence suggests that frequent consumption of zero-calorie sweeteners may be associated with metabolic disruption, changes in gut microbiome diversity and faster brain aging. Healthcare Policy Analyst Anne Kamwila tells Blavity Health, “The epidemiological evidence supports a strong statistical correlation between high intakes of artificial sweeteners and greater cognitive decline in middle-aged people.
