The Kardashian-Jenner family is leaning on each other after the death of matriarch Mary Jo “MJ” Campbell, who died July 16, at the age of 91.
A source tells PEOPLE that Kris Jenner, 70, and her children are “heartbroken” over the death of Kris’s mom MJ, who has long been considered the family’s emotional center and one of the girls’ biggest inspirations.
“MJ was such an important person for all the girls,” says the source.
MJ, who ran a children’s clothing boutique for many years and lost her second husband in 2003 after a car crash, “really taught Kris and all the girls about being entrepreneurs and getting through hard times with humor,” adds the source.
According to the insider, those lessons became foundational to the family’s success. “Kris feels MJ is the reason she and the girls learned so many invaluable lessons,” the source says. “Not just about business, but about life. Kris always says MJ’s humor lives on in all the girls.”
The source adds that MJ was known within the family for her “very dry, sarcastic” sense of humor and for always being a “straight-shooter,” qualities that made her a steady presence through decades of milestones and challenges.
The death has been difficult for Kim Kardashian, 40, who shared a close relationship with her grandmother.
“Kim truly idolized her as a self-made woman,” says the source. “She talked with MJ very frequently, and she feels they had a really special bond.”
As Kim grieves, she’s been relying on those closest to her for support. The source says she has been leaning on boyfriend Lewis Hamilton, who has been “caring and sympathetic” during this difficult time.
Khloé Kardashian is also mourning her grandmother, whom she visited often. According to the source, Khloé regularly brought her two children to spend time with MJ and is already thinking about meaningful ways to preserve her legacy.
“Khloé has been talking about how much MJ meant to all of them,” the source says. “She’s considering doing a podcast episode with Kris and her sisters about MJ’s impact and legacy, but that’s something for a little further down the road.”
Meanwhile, Kendall and Kylie Jenner have also been impacted by the loss, with the source saying the sisters always considered MJ “the backbone of the family.”
The family is expected to gather to celebrate MJ’s life with a private memorial, according to the source.
In her tribute, Kris wrote on Instagram last week, “My mom was the heart of our family. She taught me everything that truly matters … to love your family fiercely, to be kind, to show up for the people you love, and to never take a single moment together for granted.”
She later added, “When I look at my kids and my grandkids, I will forever see pieces of you in all of us. There is not a part of me that isn’t shaped by you.”
