RON WOOD'S TIPS

3.42pm Catterick

Sound Gloria (nap) ⭐⭐⭐ @ 10/11

4.12pm Catterick

Explode ⭐⭐ @ 2/1

8.10pm Lingfield

Kaori ⭐⭐ @ 11/2

3.42 Catterick – Class 6 Handicap (1m 4f)

There is a straightforward case to be made for the Roger Varian-trained Sound Gloria (nap), a lightly raced filly.

She finished third of six when upped to 1m 2f at Nottingham on her handicap debut and this daughter of Nathaniel should progress again now going even further in distance, giving her sound-looking claims in a weak race.

Sound Gloria is the sole runner on the card for Newmarket-based Varian, who has a 5-20 (25 per cent) record with his runners at this track.

Selection: 3.42pm Catterick – Sound Gloria (nap) ⭐⭐⭐

4.12 Catterick – Class 4 Handicap (1m 4f)

The Faye Bramley-trained Explode is an interesting contender, perhaps worth a speculative punt. He has lost his way, not progressing over hurdles and failing to beat a rival on his return to the Flat at Windsor recently.

But that latest outing was a 1m 2f Class 3 and he showed up well for a long way, just fading (badly) late on. He had been off for about six months and was having his first start since a breathing operation.

He could be better for that workout, and now he drops in grade. This step back up in trip on a sharp track should suit him.

It was only two Flat outings ago that he went off favourite for a Newbury Class 3, albeit finishing well beaten, when debuting for his current trainer.

Selection: 4.12pm Catterick – Explode ⭐⭐

8.10 Lingfield – Class 5 Fillies’ Handicap (7f)

George Boughey’s Kaori was well beaten over 1m 2f on her reappearance. She was then tried over a mile at Yarmouth, and if you only watched the end of that race you could think she found the trip too short, as she kept on having been outpaced.

But the seaside race was steadily run and she was a bit keen under restraint early on. Now back at 7f, I think she will be more forwardly ridden and this should be a truer test.

This daughter of Dubawi is now dropping in class and switching to fillies-only company, which could prove a good opportunity for her.

Selection: 8.10pm Lingfield – Kaori ⭐⭐
