Hollywood erupts after Emmys pull 5 major categories from live telecast as Netflix, HBO and top unions push back

 In a move that has left streamers, studios, unions, and awards insiders fuming, the Television Academy has decided to remove five major categories from the 2026 Primetime Emmys telecast. Instead of making television’s biggest night smoother, the decision has ignited one of the biggest Emmy controversies in recent memory. Now, with Hollywood pushing back from every corner, the road to Emmy glory has taken an unexpected detour.

But what exactly changed, and why is nearly everyone calling the a disastrous decision? 

According to Variety, the Television Academy has voted to shift five major categories away from the live September 14 Primetime Emmys and into the earlier weekend ceremonies on September 6. The affected races include Writing for a Variety Series, Supporting Actor and Supporting Actress in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, Directing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie, and Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. While the Academy says the move will create more room for entertainment during the broadcast, critics argue it does so at the expense of the very artists the Emmys exist to celebrate.

The criticism escalated almost immediately after the announcement, with SAG-AFTRA, the Directors Guild of America, and the Writers Guild of America issuing a rare joint statement condemning the move, as revealed by Variety. Calling the decision one that “devalues the contributions” of performers, writers, and directors, the unions argued that television’s biggest awards show should not sideline the creative talent responsible for bringing those stories to life. Behind the scenes, the backlash reportedly stretched beyond the unions, with Netflix co-CEO Bela Bajaria and HBO Max chief Casey Bloys said to have voiced their frustration directly to the Television Academy.

"The Emmys exist to celebrate the best of television and the artists who are central to bringing these stories to life. The decision to eliminate these categories from the primetime broadcast devalues the contributions of the talented people the Academy is meant to honor." Directors Guild of America and the Writers Guild of America revealed in a joint statement.

High-profile nominees including Jason Bateman, Charles Melton, David Harbour, Dakota Fanning, Nick Offerman, and Lee Sung Jin could now find themselves attending two separate Emmy weekends if they hope to collect their awards in person. For many industry insiders, the decision feels less like a scheduling adjustment and more like a step away from giving television’s biggest creative achievements the spotlight they deserve.

However, despite the growing controversy, the countdown to television’s biggest night continues, with this year’s Emmy race only getting more unpredictable.

While debate over the Academy’s decision continues, preparations for the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards are moving full steam ahead. Mariska Hargitay will host the ceremony on September 14, airing live coast-to-coast on NBC and streaming on Peacock from the Peacock Theater at L.A. LIVE. Announcing the honor, Hargitay took little time to share how honored she is to host the 78th Emmy Awards.

"Bringing important stories into the light has been the heartbeat of my career. It’s my great honor to host the 78th Emmy Awards… and celebrate this extraordinary community of storytellers,” Hagitay said while announcing the news on the Television Academy.

Meanwhile, this year’s nominations have already ignited fierce conversations across Hollywood. Drama contenders such as The Pitt, Paradise, Slow Horses, The Diplomat, Your Friends & Neighbors, and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms headline one of the ceremony’s most competitive races, headline one of the ceremony’s most competitive races, while acting categories featuring names like Patrick Ball, Billy Crudup, Jack Lowden, and Tom Pelphrey have fueled even more speculation among fans and awards experts. 

However, whether the Television Academy stands its ground or not, this controversial shake-up has already turned the road to the Emmys into one of Hollywood’s biggest talking points.
