Bushnell Farm, a historic property dating back to the 17th century, is for sale in Old Saybrook. The property at 1405–1445 Boston Post Road is listed for $12 million.
The property is home to the Elisha Bushnell House. Built in 1678, the Elisha Bushnell House began as a two-room colonial dwelling centered around a large stone chimney and was expanded over time as the needs of its occupants changed. The house now spans 2,059 square feet and has four bedrooms and one bathroom. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.
Herbert Tryon Clark III and Sharon DeLeeuw Clark purchased Bushnell Farm in 2000, after it had been vacant, and then restored its historic buildings and grounds, according to the Old Saybrook Historical Society. The Clarks aimed to preserve the farm and use it to teach students, families and community groups about Connecticut's early agricultural history. The Old Saybrook Historical Society noted on its Facebook page that the property has been used to host school groups, family outings, blacksmith and quilting demonstrations, weddings, and town gatherings. Connecticut River Museum Executive Director Brenda Milkofsky ran programs at the farm; however, she died this May.
The 20.21-acre property has mature trees, open meadows and stone walls. The listing says the property is zoned B-4 Commercial and markets it for potential uses including hospitality, an independent-living community, offices, medical facilities, retail and destination-oriented development, according to Mansion Global.
Old Saybrook Historical Society posted on its Facebook page that the organization was "saddened" to learn that the property was for sale and noted that the $12 million asking price was beyond its means, but said it remained "hopeful" that a preservation entity might acquire the property and preserve the entire farmhouse and its outbuildings. Listing agent Casey Fisher declined to comment on the listing.
"The Society is happy to assist and share information as to the historical significance and opportunity being presented to the State as well as to any buyer who recognizes and shares the goal of preserving this part of our working agricultural history that the Bushnell Farm offers," Old Saybrook Historical Society wrote on its Facebook page.
Real estate tracking firm Redfin listed the median sale price for the property's 06475 ZIP code at $742,280 over the three months ending May 2026. Redfin notes that average properties in the area sell for around list price and go pending in around 36 days, while hot homes can sell for about 5% above list price and go pending in around 10 days.
