The Miami Heat were forced to clear the air after accidentally declaring themselves the winner of the LeBron James sweepstakes.
Last month, James created significant buzz across the NBA when he declared his plans to continue playing through the 2026-27 season, but not with the Lakers. ESPN's Shams Charania reported that the 41-year-old had notified Los Angeles of his wish to join a different team next season, which would represent his 24th year in the league.
Since then, fans, players and analysts have been speculating about James' potential landing spot, with the four-time NBA champion remaining silent about his impending career decision. Yet the Heat insinuated that they acquired his talents, with Miami’s social media team sharing a link to the scheduled YouTube live stream of the “LeBron James Introductory Press Conference.”

Speaking to Charania, a spokesperson for the Heat confirmed that the franchise did not, in fact, sign James.
The YouTube livestream, which was scheduled for July 27, was unintentionally posted and has since been deleted. Miami’s social team reportedly made the error while “preparing for the possibility of James’ signing.”
That isn’t to say, however, that the Heat aren’t actively pursuing James. Giannis Antetokounmpo — who was traded to Miami this offseason in a blockbuster deal — insisted that he would relish the opportunity to join forces with the former Laker, telling ESPN: “If there was a scenario for that to happen, I'd be very, very excited.
“He's one of the best players to ever play this game, if not the best. I'd be able to learn so much from him. Obviously, [he] brings such a championship experience to the team right from day one.”
When asked about Miami’s chances of landing James, Heat president Pat Riley admitted: “I don't know, I'll be honest with you. Obviously, we've had conversations with [James’ agent] Rich [Paul] and they were very good.
“So if that happens and he wants to come to the '305,' we got a golf course. The weather's nice... And there's no state tax. So that's a little better than California.”
While participating in a panel at the CNBC/Boardroom Game Plan event, James asserted that his looming decision would arrive sooner rather than later. "I won't hold you guys up too much longer," he said.
Now in the latter stages of his career, James is carefully weighing his options before committing to his next destination. According to reports, he is seriously considering the Heat, Philadelphia 76ers, Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Denver Nuggets and Cleveland Cavaliers.
"Looking forward to what's next as I wind down the final stages of my journey," James said. "Wherever I land in the fall, hopefully, you know, if you're a ride-or-die LeBron fan, you've been down with me since Day 1.
"Hopefully, you ride with me here. If you're a ride-or-die LeBron hater, that's what you do anyway, so looking forward to seeing you as well.
"But it's going to be pretty fun. It's going to be pretty fun wherever I land. I'm going to do what I do best."
