It was September 2007 when CBS launched one of its most successful sitcoms ever, the iconic The Big Bang Theory. The brainchild of Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, it followed a group of brilliant scientists as they comedically dealt with their social shortcomings, with the help of one particular neighbor from across the hall. It went on to become a 10-time Emmy winner and spawn two prequel series, Young Sheldon and Georgie & Mandy’s First Marriage. Fast forward to today, and HBO Max is getting in on the action, releasing the first Big Bang Theory sequel. And if critics are to be believed, it’s something you’ll want to put on your must-watch list.
‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’ Premieres on HBO Max on July 23
Created, written, and executive produced by Chuck Lorre, Zak Penn, and Bill Prady, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe picks up where The Big Bang Theory ends. It follows Stuart (Kevin Sussman) in his crew as they try to fix reality after he breaks it. The series tends to lean heavier into sci-fi elements, and being on HBO Max allows it to shed the boundaries of broadcast television. Here’s a brief synopsis and trailer for the series”
“Comic book store owner Stuart Bloom is tasked with restoring reality after he breaks a device built by Sheldon and Leonard, accidentally bringing about a multiverse Armageddon. Stuart is aided in this quest by his girlfriend Denise, geologist friend Bert, and quantum physicist/all-around pain in the ass Barry Kripke. Along the way, they meet alternate-universe versions of characters we’ve come to know and love from The Big Bang Theory. As the title implies, things don’t go well.”
Critics Are Largely in Favor of ‘Stuart Fails to Save the Universe’
Early reviews are rolling in, and while there are some naysayers, most critics seem to enjoy Stuart Fails to Save the Universe, noting how different it is from The Big Bang Theory. John Anderson of The Wall Street Journal stated:
“The consistently witty Stuart Fails to Save the Universe will remind viewers of lots of other things, not just The Big Bang Theory, off of which it spins, but Bizarro World, Orpheus and Eurydice, and maybe even The Asphalt Jungle.
Amber Dowling with The Wrap stated, “It’s safe to say Stuart hasn’t failed in his mission at all, and is exactly what creators needed to keep this universe alive well after those takeout leftovers have all been consumed.”
Now, while there are many positive reviews, they aren’t all that way. One negative review that stands out is from The Hollywood Reporter’s Angie Han. She commented:
“Occasionally amusing but more slapdash than inventive, gamely performed but irredeemably sour, Stuart Fails to Save the Universe is a skippable addition to Chuck Lorre’s ever-expanding solar system of Big Bang Theory spinoffs.”
