Groovy, baby! Malibu mansion from Austin Powers and The OC is up for sale for $90 million

If you've ever fancied living like an international man of mystery - or one of Newport Beach's elite teenagers - now's your chance.

A sprawling Malibu mega-mansion that starred in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, The O.C., CSI: Miami and even a Jay-Z music video has hit the market for a cool $90 million.

Known as Venezia Pacifica, the jaw-dropping estate sits atop a bluff in Malibu's exclusive Point Dume neighborhood, boasting 176 feet of ocean frontage and uninterrupted views across the Pacific near one of Southern California's most famous surf breaks.

The sprawling property covers around 17,700 square feet on more than 1.16 acres and was designed by architect Jonathan Stout. 

Hidden beneath the mansion is a remarkable 9,500-square-foot underground garage with room for 20 cars. Outside, there's a resort-style swimming pool, spa and private access to one of Malibu's most coveted beaches.

The home was built in the early 1990s by late real estate developer Ken Harges, who reportedly bought the land for $1.7 million in 1988 before transforming it into the lavish Italian-inspired estate.

Harges' story is something of an American dream. 

Growing up in rural Tennessee, he joined the US Marine Corps after leaving school before building a successful plastering business in California that eventually launched his career as a real estate developer. He died in 2016.

He and his wife, Lorelei, built the mansion after years of living in California's San Fernando Valley.

'They wanted to trade the valley for the California coastline,' daughters Bonnie Ferguson and Wendy Geweke told The Wall Street Journal. 

The couple also drew heavily on Lorelei's Italian heritage when designing the property.

'Our mother was proudly 100 percent Italian,' the sisters said, explaining that family trips through Italy inspired the home's grand Renaissance-style architecture.

Elegant archways, stately columns, coffered ceilings, decorative millwork, stone flooring and grand fireplaces give the home the feel of a European palace rather than a Californian beach house.

At the heart of the mansion sits a spectacular double-height ballroom, topped with a dramatic barrel-vaulted glass ceiling and towering glass curtain wall. 

A striking wrought-iron and glass lift serves as another showstopping centerpiece, while a dramatic spiral staircase connects the home's two expansive floors.

The symmetrical layout places formal living spaces on either side of the ballroom, including an elegant dining room and library. Elsewhere, there's a chef's kitchen with dual islands, a home cinema, several wet bars and a wood-paneled office.

The luxurious primary suite comes complete with motorised rotating clothing carousels inside its dual dressing rooms, alongside a Roman-inspired bathroom.

Outside, expansive terraces overlook the Pacific Ocean, while the landscaped grounds include an oceanfront pavilion with classical columns, alfresco dining spaces, and a resort-style pool and spa.

The lucky new owner will also receive a key to Riviera III, one of just three exclusive gated beach easements in Point Dume, providing access to one of Malibu's most sought-after stretches of coastline.

While the mansion is impressive enough on its own, it has become almost as famous for its Hollywood appearances.

Over the years, it has been featured in Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, The O.C., CSI: Miami, The Brady Bunch Movie and Arnold Schwarzenegger's 1993 action film Last Action Hero. 

Rap icon Jay-Z also chose the estate as the backdrop for his 1998 music video for Money Ain't a Thang.

'Our parents genuinely enjoyed watching a little bit of Hollywood come to life at their home,' Ferguson and Geweke told the WSJ. 

Away from the cameras, the sisters say the mansion was at the center of family life, hosting Easter egg hunts, Christmas Eve celebrations, Fourth of July parties and college football gatherings over the years.

The listing comes as Malibu continues to attract wealthy buyers despite wider uncertainty in the luxury housing market.

Listing agent Chris Cortazzo said the area still has strong momentum.

'Malibu has energy,' he said. 'We're showing a lot more of our high-end inventory.'

According to Redfin, the median sale price in Point Dume reached $14 million in the three months ending May 31 - more than double the same period a year earlier. 

Last year, a nearby multi-parcel estate close to Little Dume Beach sold for $80 million.

The estate is listed for $90 million with Chris Cortazzo of Compass.
