SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — A major lifeline for families caring for kids in the hospital kicked off on Tuesday.
The Iowa Governor’s Charity Steer Show Campaign officially began on Tuesday morning at the Ronald McDonald House of Siouxland.
Each year, exhibitors from across the state raise a steer to be auctioned off at the Iowa State Fair, with communities donating to show support.
This year, Jase Plendl of Kingsley is showing from Siouxland.

Auction proceeds and donations go to the Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC) of Iowa and are shared across the state.
This is the 44th year for the event, and the executive director of the local house said she is surprised each and every year.
“It’s incredible to see it grow year over year,” said Christy Batien Clark, executive director for the Ronald McDonald House of Siouxland. “It’s incredible to see Iowa keep showing up to help. It’s amazing to see support. And a line of kids that want to be a part of this, a line up of families that want to be a part of this. Not just to grow awareness of the beef industry, but also to support the Ronald McDonald Houses.”
Batien Clark also said the event makes their mission to support families possible.
“We want to see the state come together to support families who are staying at the Ronald McDonald House, and that’s what we do with the proceeds that we recevie is: Provide those comforts and necessities that they need so that they can stay with their child and help their child get better,” Batien Clark said.
Last year, the Governor’s Charity Steer Show raised nearly $570,000 divided between Iowa’s three Ronald McDonald Houses.
