Google Gemini wants to let you control exactly how it sounds when speaking

Google is working on an upgrade that will let you change how your AI assistant sounds. Instead of just picking a pre-recorded voice from a list, a recent code analysis reveals that Google plans to give you full control over Gemini‘s vocal personality using four distinct parameters: Speed, Energy, Formality, and Warmth.

The hidden feature was uncovered within the Google app 17.41.12 beta by the 9to5Google team. The APK contains code strings pointing directly to a new voice customization menu. According to the report, users will soon be able to use sliders to adjust these vocal settings to match their personal preferences. Once active, your customized voice will carry over seamlessly to both the conversational Gemini Live mode and your standard daily chat interactions.

The four sliders

The upcoming toolkit goes far beyond simple volume or pitch adjustments. Google is focusing on emotional expressiveness, giving you the ability to shape how the AI behaves during a conversation.

The settings for Energy, Formality, and Warmth will feature low, medium, and high increments. If you want a casual, laid-back assistant for planning a weekend trip, you can turn down the Formality and turn up the Warmth. If you need a direct, professional briefing on some research, you can crank the Formality to high. Meanwhile, the Speed slider will offer simple slow, normal, and fast options to prevent the AI from talking over you or dragging its feet.

This development is part of a broader effort by Google to make its AI interactions feel as natural as possible. During its last I/O developer conference, the search giant also teased that support for regional dialects would eventually roll out to the platform to help localize the assistant’s tone.

The race to humanize AI

This leak surfaces at a highly competitive moment for mobile AI assistants. Apple recently introduced its own set of customization tools with iOS 27, allowing iPhone users to adjust Siri’s Pace and Expressivity. However, Apple’s implementation spreads these settings across its entire ecosystem, including Apple Maps and Safari.

Google’s approach with Gemini seems focused on depth of personality rather than ecosystem-wide reach. Offering specific sliders like “Warmth” and “Energy” will give its chatbot a distinct advantage in emotional intelligence.
