I have never made it a habit to share human food with my dog, but it doesn't matter—if I'm having a snack, she's right there next to me anyway, hoping that I might drop something that she can grab before it's too late. And if she can tell I'm getting off the couch to get a snack, there's a 100% chance she's going to follow me to the kitchen.
A lot of dogs out there are just like her when it comes to snacks, including the Golden Retriever in this TikTok video. No matter how sneaky his mom tried to be about snack time, he was onto her!
Murph's mom did everything right. She walked to the pantry quietly, she was extra stealthy opening the door, and she even tried to pour the Goldfish crackers into her bowl with as little noise as possible.
It didn't matter, though. Murph was right there, tail wagging, huge smile on his face. At this point, does she even have a choice other than to share with him?

Dogs Are Experts at Detecting Secret Snacks
Most dogs I've met are just like Murph, the Golden Retriever. They could be deep in a nap, but if they sense that you're getting up to grab a snack, they will wake up so quickly it's like they discovered their tail is on fire.
As Petland points out, there's actually a science behind this behavior, and it all comes back to how strong their senses are. Even if you're eating a snack that you don't think has a smell, it does, and your pup can definitely pick up on it, as faint as it might be. It also helps that food smells more strongly to dogs than it does to us.
And then, there's the fact that our dogs know us all too well. They thrive on routines and patterns, so when we open the fridge or pantry, they know we're getting ourselves a snack and immediately go on high alert.
If you tend to drop your snacks on the floor or have ever intentionally shared your food with your pup at least once, they will remember that, too. Nothing gets past them!
