U.S. Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand visited R's Market in Rochester on Monday to highlight the rising cost of groceries as part of a statewide tour focused on inflation and consumer confidence.
Gillibrand, D-N.Y., said increasing prices continue to strain family budgets across New York and called for greater accountability over the rising cost of everyday essentials.
Gillibrand highlights rising grocery prices
Gillibrand's visit comes as the latest Bureau of Labor Statistics Consumer Price Index showed headline inflation rose 4.2% over the past 12 months — the sharpest annual increase since April 2023.
She said many working families continue to struggle as wage growth has failed to keep pace with the rising cost of groceries and other household necessities.
According to the latest inflation data, prices for fruits and vegetables have increased 6.1%, while nonalcoholic beverages are up 5.8%.
Gillibrand blamed President Donald Trump's policies, including U.S. involvement in the ongoing war in Iran, for driving up costs.
"Donald Trump's policies are making basic necessities unaffordable for hardworking New Yorkers," Gillibrand said. "He promised to tackle rising costs, but instead he's made everything worse. Prices on groceries, gas and essentials have skyrocketed here at home as he pours taxpayer dollars into a forever war abroad. I will continue to demand accountability and fight for all Americans being crushed by these unsustainable costs."
Local business owner discusses rising costs
Gillibrand was joined by state Sen. Jeremy Cooney and R's Market owner Carrie Cocca.
Cocca said independent grocery stores face increasing pressure as they try to support local vendors while keeping everyday staples affordable for customers.
She said prices at R's Market have increased about 30% over the past year.
"We strive to offer the best selections, but the costs to do so can sometimes seem crippling," Cocca said.
Statewide tour focuses on inflation
Rochester is one of several stops on Gillibrand's statewide tour highlighting the impact of rising grocery prices and declining consumer confidence.
She has also held events in Utica, Poughkeepsie, Latham and Riverhead.
