Training camp has yet to begin and the New York Giants have a plethora of players with a lot on the line this season. All three of Jaxson Dart, Cam Skattebo, and Malik Nabers need to prove they can stay healthy, but thanks to Kayvon Thibodeaux, none of them are the Giant with the most to prove.
It feels like every offseason we are labeling Thibs as the player with the most on the line, but if there's any summer where this shoe fits, it's this one. After his fifth-year option was picked up last summer, he's entering a contract year, but he's set to take on a diminished role for a much-improved defense.
It's been a slippery slope for the former top-five pick. Following his 11.5-sack season in 2023, he's compared for just eight sacks across the last two seasons combined. It's gotten to the point where the Giants dangled Thibodeaux in trade talks, but opted to keep him when the offers weren't good.

But those offers not being good could turn out to be a good thing. New York knows that a reckoning is coming with the 25-year-old that could soon have him on his way out the door. While going over every team's player with the most on the line in 2026, The Athletic's Dan Duggan named Thibodeaux.
"The Giants listened to trade calls on Thibodeaux this offseason, but elected to keep the No. 5 pick from the 2022 draft when the offers were underwhelming," Duggan wrote... "If he produces an 11.5-sack season like he did in 2023, a monster payday awaits."
Joe Schoen knew Big Blue wasn't getting more than a fourth-round pick for him in a trade, but fear not Giants fans: this is nothing to worry about. Even if the fifth-year edge rusher has a career year as a backup, the franchise has an opportunity to maximize his return value before the trade deadline.
But even if they don't, they'll get more out of him than the trade market would right now. If the Oregon product leaves in free agency in hopes of re-capturing a starting role, there's a chance he gets a nice payday, which could net the Giants a 2028 compensatory pick worth more than the current price tag.
Even though Brian Burns and Abdul Carter have diminished his snap share, he'll still play a key role for the G-Men in 2026. And with a new defensive system in place under Dennard Wilson, he can very well have a bounce-back year--but having to extend him long-term is nothing for them to worry about.
The Giants have no reason to waver on their stance on a Kayvon Thibodeaux extension when they barely wanted to pick up his fifth-year option. So instead of panicking about a player who has no place in their long-term plans, he may have a lot on the line, but his inevitable departure is a win-win for the team.
