Earlier this week, Dante Dowdell, the Georgia Bulldogs’ running back, was involved in an ATV accident. Program coach Kirby Smart confirmed the news on July 21. Per reports, Dowdell sustained serious injuries.

“He’s injured,” Smart said at SEC Media Day. “We don’t know when his return will be. I don’t know the specifics of it, to be honest with you. It was a recreational vehicle, and he had some serious injuries.”

He was in an accident near his home in Picayune, Mississippi. The details of his injuries or the accident remain unknown.

Dowdell is being treated at Shepherd Center in Atlanta. Smart said that the running back’s future with the team remains unknown as Dowdell battles serious injuries.

“He’s out of the really tough range, but as far as his complete health and coming all the way back, I don’t know what that looks like in terms of this year,” Smart said per a July 21 ESPN report

Dowdell is admitted to a center specializing in spinal cord and brain injury treatment and rehabilitation. He had transferred to Georgia from Kentucky this offseason and was expected to serve as a backup this season.

From breakout season to uncertain future Dante Dowdell’s career so far

Standing at 6’1 and weighing around 225 lbs, the running back has played for three programs. In 2023, he played for the Oregon Ducks and recorded 17 carries for 90 yards. He scored one touchdown that season.

In the following season, he joined the Nebraska Cornhuskers for his career-best season so far. He recorded 12 touchdowns from 143 carries for 614 yards.

Last season, he racked up 112 carries for 560 yards. He scored three touchdowns. Over the last two seasons, he made 14 receptions for 51 yards.

This accident has put a stop to any plans for him this season. Smart shared how the team is dealing with the accident.

“He’s just a tremendous kid [with a] great family,” Smart said per ESPN. “We’re very supportive of them. Our players have been up there to see him. It’s a really tough deal.”
