King defended the look of her clothing during the July 21 ‘CBS Mornings’ broadcast
NEED TO KNOW
- Gayle King had a message to share to a publication that called her one of the “worst-dressed” stars at the 2026 FIFA World Cup Final
- On CBS Mornings, the journalist reacted to the ranking and said that she didn’t realize the sporting event was a “fashion show”
- King attended the July 19 tournament with her son Will and his wife Elise Smith
Gayle King felt like she scored with her World Cup outfit, and that’s all that matters.
After attending the soccer match on Sunday, July 19, the journalist, 71, addressed criticism of the outfit she wore during a July 21 broadcast of CBS Mornings. King began by saying that a publication, which she decided to keep anonymous, named her one of the “worst-dressed” stars for her all-white look, which they described as “frumpy” and “dowdy.”
For the outing, King wore a Boston Proper tank top, Alice + Olivia cargo pants (ironed by her “favorite” son William “Will” Bumpus Jr.) and silver Sneex shoes.
“I didn’t realize that the World Cup had become such a fashion show,” King said as her co-hosts defended her. “I really didn’t get it, not that I’m sensitive or anything about it,” she added.
King revealed that Kylie Jenner and Blake Lively also made the outlet’s bottom ranking, but she said, “I think all these women look great. I’m in very good company.”
On the red carpet at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, which hosted the match between Argentina and Spain, King posed alongside her son, his wife, Elise Smith, and Nina Cooper.
With all the outside noise, it’s important that King keeps a close inner circle, which includes best friend Oprah Winfrey, who also found herself addressing scrutiny over her appearance at Paris Fashion Week earlier this year.
Winfrey and King attended the Chloé Fall/Winter 2026 runway show, and footage of their arrival at the event, shared on TikTok by Paris Match, showed the former smiling as she took slow and tentative steps. According to Winfrey, 72, the duo’s entrance sparked some unkind reactions online.
“On the internet, somebody was… you know how people drag you on the internet. So they were dragging me and Gayle saying, ‘Look at them walking like they’re 90 years old,’ ” Winfrey said in a clip shared on Instagram by user @jznotthatjayz on March 12.
The media mogul explained that she wasn’t wearing glasses or contacts, so “I didn’t know where I was walking.” She added, “So everybody who’s saying ‘you’re walking like you’re 90,’ I could not see.”
