Gambit & Reed Richards Return Right After Marvel's Avengers: Doomsday Trailer

After the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, Gambit and Reed Richards make surprising appearances in Marvel Studios' new releaase before the MCU movie.

Marvel's new release features several heroes, and two of those who appear in theAvengers: Doomsday trailer have now shown up in very different roles in this epic Marvel Studios series. The Avengers: Doomsday marketing push started last December, when four character-focused teasers were shown in theaters with Avatar: Fire and Ash before Marvel shared it online on its social media.

Then, the film went mostly silent for what felt like an eternity, before the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer was finally released this week, revealing many exciting character match-ups, including both heroes who will band together, and those who will fight in the upcoming Marvel movie. Characters like Thor, Steve Rogers, Doctor Doom, Cyclops, Yelena Belova, and more got to shine in the footage.

Among those were Reed Richards, the leader of the Fantastic Four, and Gambit, who was played by Channing Tatum in his debut, 2024's Deadpool & Wolverine, and was brought back by popular demand. Pedro Pascal's Mr. Fantastic will be teaming up with Captain America's Avengers and the New Avengers, while Tatum's Gambit was shown fighting Shang-Chi and other heroes in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer.

After Marvel dropped the first Avengers: Doomsday trailer on Monday, July 20, it only took a couple of days for X-Men '97 season 2's latest episode to arrive on Disney+. The Marvel Studios TV show returned with an exciting half hour that featured quite a few characters from the comics, including Reed Richards and Gambit, just days after their key roles in the Avengers: Doomsday trailer, but in different ways.

Reed and Gambit's appearances are a big deal. The characters made their X-Men '97 season 2 debuts in episode 6, "Danger.exe." Mr. Fantastic, like a wide range of characters that includes fan-favorites like Deadpool and Spider-Man, does not fully appear in the new season of the Marvel series. Rather than the actual Reed Richards showing up, Morph uses their shape-shifting powers to impersonate Reed. They then proceed to use Reed's powers to play with kids outside the X-Mansion. This is just a fun cameo for Fantastic Four fans that is timely after the Avengers: Doomsday trailer's release this week.

As for Gambit, that is a meaty role. Remy LeBeau was one of the main players of X-Men '97 season 1 until he died by sacrificing himself to take out the Tri-Headed Sentinel that caused the Genosha massacre. Gambit has been dead since then, but at the end of X-Men '97 season 1, it was teased that Apocalypse would bring him that. It is precisely what transpires at the end of the show's latest episode, with Gambit being resurrected by Apocalypse, who used a machine to do so, and coming back as a darker version of himself — Death from the comics.

Gambit And Reed Richards Should Play Major Roles In Avengers: Doomsday

After appearing in very different roles in X-Men '97 season 2's latest episode, both Gambit and Reed Richards will shine in a major way when Avengers: Doomsday releases in theaters on December 18. That was teased in the MCU movie's trailer. That said, both characters were always going to be big. After all, Reed Richards is Doctor Doom's main rival in the comics, which means Pascal's MCU hero should have plenty of screen time to coordinate all the Marvel teams against the villain and also to interact with Robert Downey Jr.'s Doctor Doom.

As for Tatum's Gambit, it seems like the Avengers and the other heroes will be venturing into their universe, with Gambit, Cyclops, Mystique, and others fighting them, likely wanting to protect their home. With the multiverse collapsing, there is probably an incursion putting all the heroes' worlds up against one another, and Gambit has the power to help save the X-Men's world. It will be interesting to see if the heroes' paths often cross in Avengers: Doomsday after their joint appearances in Marvel releases this week.
