In 1998, Hasbro introduced the world to "Furby" — a chatty, electronic fantasy creature with "a mind of its own." Over two decades later, this icon of '90s-era nostalgia has been redesigned as a stylish, "gal-style" character.
Per the PR Times, Kotobukiya recently unveiled "Pretty Girl Furby" as an upcoming addition to its popular "Bishoujo" statue collection, which depicts popular, non-human characters with imaginative humanoid designs. Official Furby Anime Girl Makeover Brings the Classic Toy Back in a New Form
The original Furby was marketed to kids as an intelligent companion whose personality would evolve over time. When first removed from the packaging, the creature speaks solely in a language called "Furbish." The more one interacts with it, the faster it drops its native tongue. The toy's design was highly innovative, integrating both light and motion sensors so that it could react to its environment. However, these same sensors also resulted in an infamous tendency for the Furby to randomly "awaken" at inopportune moments, such as in dark rooms in the middle of the night.
In spite of this design flaw — or perhaps partially because of it — Furby's notoriety has withstood the test of time. Consequently, the toy has been a frequent gag target in parodic works such as The Simpsons and Robot Chicken, among others.Since its 1998 release, Hasbro has kept the Furby brand name alive across several unique generations, each bringing different color variants and technological upgrades. Notably, Furby celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2023 with the debut of its fifth generation.
Standing approximately 225mm (or 8.8 inches) tall, "Pretty Girl Furby" is based on Furby's first-gen design. She sports a furry yet fashionable overcoat that represents the "fluffy texture" of Furby's coat. The back is also adorned with the face of her Furbish counterpart. She also wears a pair of removable, white-rimmed sunglasses, the bridge of which is topped with Furby's classic black light sensor. Additionally, she is shown wearing a pair of bright yellow stiletto boots that match the color of Furby's feet. The finishing touch is the Furby logo that serves as her belt buckle.
In addition to a Furby-themed display stand, this Bishoujo release also comes with a gray-and-pink Furby mini-figure. When displayed side by side, the two figures can be made to open or close their eyes, allowing for a wide variety of facial expressions. The Furby figure stands approximately 70mm (or 2.7 inches) tall.
Bishoujo's "Pretty Girl Furby" is scheduled for release in March 2027. At the time of this writing, the figure set is available to preorder on Kotobukiya's Japanese site for approximately 25,300 yen (US$155.78). Alternatively, the figures are available on AmiAmi, a prominent Japan-based hobby goods retailer that ships worldwide.
"Pretty Girl Furby" is also available to preorder on Kotobukiya USA's online storefront for a slightly higher cost. On that site, the listed price is $179.99 USD. Additionally, the North American release is not officially scheduled to hit the market until April 2027.
