The iconic horror movie A Nightmare on Elm Street will be rebooted with a new feature film that's in the works at Paramount. Very little is known about the project at this time, but original Freddy Krueger actor Robert Englund has shared his hopes for the new movie.
Englund famously played Freddy in seven Elm Street movies along with the Friday the 13th crossover, Freddy vs. Jason. After the news broke that the franchise was getting another reboot via Paramount Primal, Englund was asked about it during a new interview with ComingSoon to promote Pinocchio Unstrung. The horror legend feels that the movie should take inspiration from A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors rather than trying to reimagine the original film, which the 2009 reboot did amid heavy criticism.
Robert Englund Doesn't Want Another Remake of Part 1
"I hope they don’t remake Part 1 again," Englund stated. "I think we’ve had enough of that. We did a good one for no money, and they did one back in 2009. I think maybe they should start with Part 3 because it’s my understanding that if you really added up all the dimes and nickels, Dream Warriors is actually the most successful and most popular film in the franchise. It came out several years after the first one, so A Nightmare on Elm Street and A Nightmare on Elm Street 2 have a head start in terms of earnings."
He added, "Dream Warriors has that great 'Previously on A Nightmare on Elm Street' opening where it’s all summed up, and then you have the original cast. I think that might be an interesting way to get into any kind of revival of the franchise."
The Reboot Is Expected to Reimagine Part 1
A Nightmare on Elm Street 3: Dream Warriors brought back original final girl Heather Langenkamp as Nancy Thompson after her absence in the second film. When Freddy targets a new group of teenagers in their dreams, Nancy, now working as a psychiatrist, helps them with forming a plan to thwart the sadistic murderer in dreamland. By reimagining this film instead of the 1984 original, the reboot could skip over retelling Freddy's backstory and jump right into the carnage.
However, a reboot of the third film is unlikely, as it's expected that the new movie will take inspiration from the original. It was recently announced that Paramount Pictures acquired the rights to the screenplay for the first Nightmare on Elm Street movie specifically. This could be seen as a risky move, given how lambasted the 2010 reboot turned out to be when taking that approach. In any case, many fans of the franchise are nevertheless excited, given that it's been 16 years since any version of Freddy Krueger has been on the big screen.
A release date has not been set for the new Nightmare on Elm Street movie, but Englund's Pinocchio Unstrung will be released on July 24, 2026.
