Fred Armisen revealed that he once issued an apology to late musician Prince.
During a July 2026 episode of actor Michael Rosenbaum's podcast,Inside of You, Armisen referenced that he did several impressions of Prince for a popular Saturday Night Live sketch alongside Maya Rudolph, who played Beyoncé. Armisen, who was an SNL cast member for 11 seasons until 2013, said he once approached Prince about the "Prince Show" sketch while the "Purple Rain" singer was at 30 Rock.
"I said, 'Hey, Prince.' He was like, before a rehearsal, and he turned around, and I don't know why I put it this way. I said, 'I'm sorry about my impression of you," recalled the Portlandia star.
According to Armisen, Prince, who died in 2016 at the age of 57, responded with graciousness.
"And he's like, 'You're sorry?' And then he smiled and gave me like a little rub on my arm," said Armisen during the podcast episode.
When Rosenbaum said he believed Prince's reaction was "sweet," Armisen agreed, stating, "Really sweet."
Fred Armisen Shared Another Story About Interacting With Prince
During the July 2026 Inside of You episode, Armisen shared he had other interactions with Prince. He said that he once told Prince how much he appreciated his talents as a musician.
"There was one time where he had his own party after SNL, and I went to his party. And he was sitting alone at a table, not in a sad way, in a way like he just wanted to eat a little something. He was eating macaroni and cheese, and I sat with him nervously, saying, 'I think you're the greatest,'" said Armisen.
Armisen said that Prince unexpectedly replied, "You know what? I think the greatest is this macaroni and cheese." The SNL alum suggested he was initially disappointed by Prince's response, but now thinks "he was just trying to do a bit."
