A woman is shifting gears and finding her own path in the dazzling world of The Rally.
From former Uber and Waymo executive Carla Vass comes the winding tale of one woman’s luxurious escapades on the roads of Europe when she collides with the unfinished business of her past. Set to debut in September, Vass’s debut novel is “perfect for fans of The Wedding People and The White Lotus,” per publisher Hachette Book Group.
The Rally follows Charlotte “Charlie” Walker, co-founder of the blossoming dating app Flutter, just as a romantic advance from her business partner tosses her right out of the company. In need of a getaway, Charlie joins her best friend on the Rally on a whim — “an extravagant European road trip featuring luxury cars, lavish parties and breathtaking destinations,” the book’s synopsis reads.
“Although she feels out of place, Charlie embraces her new freedom, indulging in the Rally’s hedonism,” the synopsis continues. “But just as she begins to regain her footing, Charlie realizes she can’t outdrive her past: Instead she must reckon with the fallout from her ouster, her company’s buried secrets and an unexpected attraction that complicates everything.”
Vass — whose own background includes stints at Uber, Waymo and founding her own startup — tells PEOPLE the idea for The Rally came to her in her career’s earliest days. She was 23, freshly graduated and in a new job at Goldman Sachs, and suddenly surrounded by glitz and prestige at her very first classic car rally.
So she did what any amazed twenty-something would do, and imagined the setting before her as a scene in a novel.
“When I landed in the middle of this rally — a world of impossibly glamorous, adventurous people, full of scandals and secrets and backstories — something in me woke up,” Vass says.
She tells PEOPLE she spent much of her career “at conference tables steeling myself to speak,” battling imposter syndrome in major corporate settings. But now, as an author, Vass is certain she is finally “doing exactly what I was meant to do.”
The glitzy world of The Rally is, in so many ways, the perfect escape, Vass says. But beneath the idyllic backdrops and exorbitant wealth is the story of a woman sh believes will resonate with many.
“I want to whisk readers away into this glamorous, chaotic, gloriously shallow world of vintage cars, champagne and beautiful people behaving badly. If all you want is to escape for a few hours, the book is yours,” Vass says. “But if you want to go deeper, it’s there: underneath the glamour, it’s about a woman who loses the company she built and has to figure out who she is without it.”
