Former Bayern Munich academy star headed to Toronto

Former Bayern Munich prospect Niklas Dorsch is reportedly heading for a new challenge in Major League Soccer.

Toronto FC have reached an agreement with Heidenheim to sign the 28-year-old midfielder, with the deal reportedly worth around $4.3 million and set to run for five years per transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano. The clubs are still finalizing the documentation, but the move would mark a major new chapter in Dorsch’s career.

Dorsch came through the Bayern Munich academy and made one senior Bundesliga appearance for the club during the 2017/18 season. He later built a solid career in Germany and Belgium, playing for Heidenheim, Gent and Augsburg before returning to Heidenheim. He has since made more than 100 Bundesliga appearances.

Now, at 28, Dorsch appears ready to take his experience across the Atlantic.

For Toronto FC, this could be an important signing. Dorsch is a defensive midfielder with extensive experience at a high level of European football, and his ability to provide defensive stability and control in midfield could be exactly what the Canadian club needs.

For Bayern Munich fans, it is another reminder of the many different paths taken by players who once came through the club’s academy. Dorsch did not establish himself in Munich, but he has gone on to enjoy a strong professional career.
