Finland’s grocery store ‘single baskets’ are the boldest dating move I’ve seen

Finland Has Pink Grocery Baskets For Singles
A grocery store in Finland has pink “single baskets” that let shoppers signal they are single and open to meeting someone while shopping.

Just grab one and flirt your way from checkout to true love.

Dating apps are exhausting. A pink grocery basket that says “I’m single” may not be subtle, but at least it gets to the point.

Digital creator Roya Fox recently shared a video from a grocery store in Finland, where she spotted something unusual near the entrance: pale pink shopping baskets meant for singles.

The baskets looked like a typical grocery store setup at first, but Fox pointed out that they were labeled with the Finnish word “Sinkkukori,” meaning “single basket.”

“You can walk around with a pink basket, and maybe that’s how you find a husband,” she said.

No profile. No algorithm. Just a basket that says, yes, I am looking for love, and you can find me somewhere between the cucumbers and the crackers.

“In Finland you don’t have to go out to the bar or the club to meet someone,” Fox added. “You can just use a pink basket at the grocery store.”

The concept doesn’t appear to be completely new, either. A Reddit thread from nearly a decade ago discussed “Sinkkukori,” and commenters chimed in with similar singles-coded ideas from other places. One person said that in Norway, hats worn in the mountains can be color-coded, with red meaning taken and green meaning single. Another said that some grocery stores in Sweden have held singles nights where shoppers use special baskets and the store adds extras like tastings or deals on romantic items.

The comments on Fox’s video were split between people who loved the idea and people already imagining the worst-case scenario.

“Imagine you grab one and no one talks to you,” one commenter wrote. Another person admitted the basket’s dating signal might be wasted on them: “I would grab it because it’s pink.”

Some viewers were curious about the actual success rate. “I wonder if anyone’s ever found love with these,” one person wrote. Another had a practical question: “Are only women carrying these or do men carry them too?”

One commenter who said they’d lived in Finland for two years added that they had been told Finnish men don’t always approach women first (rude), so the basket may only get you so far.

If New York had these, I would absolutely be walking up and down the aisles pretending to compare pasta shapes for 45 minutes, batting my eyelashes until someone taller would help me reach the snacks placed criminally high.

While there’s no guarantee a pink basket will find you true love, it’s definitely easier than incessantly swiping on the apps, and frankly, I’d rather take my chances in the cereal aisle.
