A private equity takeover last summer set off a steady wave of closures at Family Dollar. That trend has continued so far this year.
In many communities, particularly rural ones, Family Dollar serves as a lifeline for people trying to save money on groceries and other everyday essentials. But as the chain shutters hundreds of locations across the country, those same communities are increasingly left without an affordable retailer.
Since going private, Family Dollar has been closing stores at a striking pace. A Local Falcon analysis identified at least 350 permanent closures between July 2025 and May 2026—roughly one store shutting down every single day.
The shift didn’t happen overnight. It originates in July 2025. That month, Dollar Tree sold Family Dollar to private equity firms Brigade Capital Management and Macellum Capital Management for around $1 billion. This deal marked the start of a major restructuring effort and, in hindsight, a turning point for the chain.
Company leaders have cited a tough economic climate; reduced government assistance, such as lower SNAP benefits; and shrinking customer purchases as the main drivers behind the cuts.
Where has Family Dollar closed in 2026?
Inc. found 15 Family Dollar closure-related events across the U.S. so far in 2026. Ohio was hit particularly hard with six confirmed closures—more than any other state in Inc.’s findings.
