The positive influence of 'Faker' Lee Sang-hyeok is now being directed toward youth struggling with cyber gambling.
The National Police Agency announced that it held an appointment ceremony at its headquarters in Seodaemun-gu on the 22nd, naming Lee 'Faker' Sang-hyeok as an honorary police officer and promotional ambassador for cyber gambling prevention.
The KNPA noted that it granted 'Faker' the rank of 'Police Constable'—the same rank as those recruited through competitive hiring for cyber investigation roles—in recognition of his high profile as an esports athlete and his role as a role model for youth, having consistently demonstrated self-discipline, focus, and moderation throughout his long career.
As a promotional ambassador for cyber gambling prevention, 'Faker' plans to encourage youth participation by appearing in promotional videos and posters for the 'Youth Cyber Gambling Voluntary Reporting System,' which the KNPA is running through August. He will also present autographed uniforms to youth who have overcome gambling addiction through rehabilitation programs.
Meanwhile, the KNPA has been operating the 'Youth Cyber Gambling Voluntary Reporting System' from May 18 to August 31 to facilitate early detection, counseling, treatment, and guidance for youth addicted to cyber gambling. As of July 16, a total of 806 voluntary reports have been received.
Youth who voluntarily report are connected to rehabilitation programs following initial consultations and gambling addiction assessments conducted by school police officers and counselors from specialized gambling prevention agencies. In the police disposition phase, authorities consider factors such as the gambling amount, the individual's level of remorse, and progress in treatment. Through joint deliberation and resolution by a guidance review committee—which includes external experts at each police station—the police aim to provide maximum leniency, such as through warnings or summary judgment requests.
Yoo Jae-sung, Acting Commissioner General of the Korean National Police Agency, stated, "It is crucial to detect youth cyber gambling early and begin counseling and treatment before the problem escalates," adding, "I hope 'Faker's' positive influence will give youth in need the courage to come forward without hesitation."
'Faker' expressed his ambition, saying, "I am honored to be appointed as an honorary police officer and promotional ambassador, and I feel a great sense of responsibility. I will actively participate in these activities to raise awareness among youth about the dangers of cyber gambling and the importance of the voluntary reporting system."
