Former Auburn Tigers combo guard Aden Holloway has had a mostly better time in Tuscaloosa playing on Nate Oats' Alabama Crimson Tide than he did on the Plains. That is, until he was caught with over two pounds of marijuana earlier this year and faced the prospect of time in prison.
The good news for Holloway is that Oats and Alabama AD Greg Byrne are forgiving him for it, having given him a direct path to returning to the team. Byrne told AL.com as much on Monday, stealing some thunder from 2026 SEC Football Media Days, though he did note that Holloway's return requirements haven't yet been fulfilled.
As the Tuscaloosa News reports, though, Holloway has pretty straightforward and simple steps remaining.
"Holloway had to write a letter of apology and was ordered to pay $150 monthly, as well as complete 50 hours of community service. Holloway must also attend any required classes or educational courses and must successfully complete random drug and alcohol screenings," Tuscaloosa News' Emilee Smarr wrote.
"An exit interview is also required upon completion of the program. Should Holloway complete all of these steps in the Second Chance Program, his charges will be dropped. If unsuccessful, he will be convicted."
There's simply no way Oats will allow Holloway to go down in Tuscaloosa County. To that end, there's no way Holloway does anything but return to the hardwood repping the elephant, given those requirements.
Aden Holloway deserves to return given previous Alabama standards. And common sense.
Simply put, the fact that Tony Mitchell ever played for Nick Saban's football program means Holloway will almost certainly be back in a Tide uniform. Iron Bowl rivalry aside, there's no good reason to keep Holloway off the floor. Many University of Alabama students from states like New Jersey, New York, and California, to name a few, could legally use marijuana in their home states. Sure, over two pounds is illegal anywhere, but doing time in prison for two felony charges, first-degree possession of marijuana and failure to affix a tax stamp, is beyond excessive.
This isn't the first, nor will it be the last, case of its kind. As crazy as this sounds, Holloway being excessively punished in the state of Alabama could be a deterrent for many great recruits from legal marijuana states to either Iron Bowl rival.
Please, let's not pretend students at Auburn or other SEC schools aren't partaking in the same activities. Don't be so suburban. The high and mighty opposition to a plant that grows from the earth and does objectively less harm than alcohol is somewhat outdated in the year 2026.
As for Holloway's basketball prospects, he'll have a better roster to play with if/when he returns to the floor. Oats recruited great size and length in the portal and beyond, potentially giving the Tide an answer down low that prevented anything more than a Sweet 16 run this past March. Holloway may be the only piece missing, and it won't take much to get him back.
In a different world, Holloway probably wouldn't deserve the same chance. This is a world that says a lot of evil things are allowable, and in much of the country, marijuana is legal, though. Lest we forget that it's medically legal in Alabama, after all.
