PlayStation Plus got a makeover in 2022, when the subscription service was split into three tiers: Essential, Extra, and Premium. Essential is the cheapest option and gives you access to online features, plus a handful of free games each month. Extra costs a little more and gets you everything that Essential comes with, plus access to a library of PS5 and PS4 titles. Then you have Premium, the most expensive tier, which includes all of that, a selection of classic games to play, and other features, including PS Portal cloud streaming capabilities.
Regardless of the tier to which you're subscribed, PS Plus is constantly changing. New games are added to all three tiers every month, and games leave its Extra and Premium libraries. I'm here to let you know which games are arriving each month, as well as which ones you'll need to play soon since they're on their way out. Below you'll find what's coming this July, as well as what you might have missed last month.
PS Plus Essential
Subscribe to the cheapest tier of PS Plus, and you will have Essential, a service that not only grants you access to online multiplayer in an array of compatible games, but also upwards of three free games every month for you to keep for as long as your subscription is active.
A big one will lead the way when July's Essential games become available on July 7, as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 will be available to claim. Not only will that give you even more Call of Duty options following the reveal of PS5 Black Ops ports, but it is clearly a play to get people on the Modern Warfare train ahead of the series' return via Modern Warfare 4's release later this year.
Joining Modern Warfare 3 in July's PS Plus giveaways are For the King 2 and CrossCode. The former is an RPG adventure that blends tabletop gameplay with video gameplay that can be played alone or in co-op with up to three friends, while the latter is a very different RPG inspired by gaming's 16-bit era. A 2D adventure that feels both futuristic and like a lost game plucked from the past.
PS Plus Extra
Subscribe to Extra, and you will be granted access to a library of games that were released on the PS5 and PS4. In June, PlayStation started staggering the addition of those games to Extra rather than making them all available on the same day. That trend continues via the seven titles coming your way throughout the latter half of July.
One of the bigger Extra additions this month will be live and available to play through Plus by the time you read this. That game is PlayStation exclusive, Rise of the Ronin. The samurai game comes to Plus on July 15, or July 16 in Japan. Wherever you are, if you have Plus, it's available now.
Joining it on July 21 is another big, and in my opinion, criminally overlooked game, Avatar: Frontiers of Pandora. A gorgeous game that takes place in the same world as the movies, and one Ubisoft has continued to support despite it seemingly not leaving the kind of mark that the Avatar movies do. Firefighting Simulator: Ignite comes to PS Plus Extra the same day.
The biggest Extra drop of July is being saved until the end of the month. Four of July's seven Extra games will be available from July 28. That quartet will include Power Rangers beat 'em up Rita's Rewind, and the original Dying Light - something to soften the blow after The Beast's last-gen port got shelved this week.
PS Plus Premium
Subscribe to Premium, the top tier of PS Plus, and not only will you get everything included with Essential and Extra, but you'll also be granted access to the Classics Catalog. Premium's growing library of old games, dating all the way back to the original PlayStation.
Don't get your hopes up too high, but it looks like the one game per month on Premium curse might finally be broken, for one month at least. On July 21, not only will we be getting Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy, but also Indigo Prophecy. A lot of controversy is plaguing PlayStation right now. Adding more than a single game per month to Premium would be an overdue, albeit small, win.
Classics Catalog games are typically also added to the PlayStation Store for those who don't have Premium but still want to play them.
Coming Soon To PS Plus
We don't always have an idea of what's coming to PS Plus after the month we're actually in. However, we know of at least two games that will be joining various Plus libraries over the summer. The biggest of them is Big Walk. The new HouseHouse game will be available across all three tiers of PS Plus the day it releases, which is now confirmed to be August 4.
PlayStation also revealed what its nest Premium game after Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy is going to be - Onimusha: Dawn of Dreams. Joining PS Plus Premium in August, likely being added to prepare people for Way of the Sword's release this September.
Leaving PS Plus
Unfortunately, when more games join the Extra and Premium libraries each month, several games leave to make room for them. There's a bigger haul than usual departing PS Plus this month, with 12 titles set to return to full price whether you have Plus or not.
The two big ones from those 12 are Tropico 6 and Risk of Rain 2. If you've had your eye on either of those games, or you're midway through playing them and you're not done, time to pick up the pace. Roki, Cursed to Golf, and everything else listed above will also be gone from the Extra library before the end of July.
