Steven Spielberg and the cast of Disclosure Day are breaking down the new science fiction epic as it arrives on digital.
Released in theaters in June, the famed director’s latest sci-fi adventure is now headed for a home entertainment release complete with new behind-the-scenes material. In an exclusive preview of the bonus content, Emily Blunt‘s meteorologist Margaret Fairchild — who takes center stage in the film opposite Josh O’Connor — is dissected by the actress, director and more.
“It’s a normal day, and she’s having the usual encounter that she does with her stoner boyfriend, Jackson [Wyatt Russell], and they’re in the kitchen and a red cardinal flies in,” Blunt, 43, says in the PEOPLE-exclusive preview.
As she speaks, behind-the-scenes footage shows Spielberg, 79, at work on the scene alongside the film’s crew, directing stars Blunt and Russell, 40, in the kitchen scene.
“You find that she seemingly gets this power from a red cardinal in their kitchen,” Russell then says of his on-screen girlfriend. “And it activates her to become the person that she is going to form into as the movie continues.”
Spielberg also offers some insight into Blunt’s character, and the awakening of her supernatural mind-reading skills, which lead her to whistleblowing programmer Daniel Kellner (O’Connor, 36).
“The character Margaret, brilliantly played by Emily Blunt, she takes so much of what’s happening to her in her stride,” the legendary filmmaker explains in the new bonus content. “She doesn’t know she’s speaking Russian. She doesn’t know she’s speaking Korean. She has no idea.”
“All she knows is that nothing is the same and will never be the same from that moment forward,” Spielberg adds of Blunt’s character.
The segment about Blunt’s character — and specifically, the scene that sparks the awakening of her supernatural abilities — is one part of a more than 50-minute look at the making of Disclosure Day in the sci-fi thriller’s home entertainment release. The movie will be available to purchase in 4K UHD and on Blu-ray and DVD on Aug. 25.
Along with the in-depth featurette on the “filmmaking secrets and real-life inspirations behind the movie,” the new BTS bonus content — available at participating retailers — will also include a special look at Spielberg’s longstanding relationship with the film’s composer John Williams.
Disclosure Day marked the duo’s 30th collaboration, joining a catalog of classics including Jaws, E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial and Close Encounters of the Third Kind.
Also starring Colin Firth, Eve Hewson and Colman Domingo, Disclosure Day has an official logline that channels its central question: “If you found out we weren’t alone, if someone showed you, proved it to you, would that frighten you?”
