Elon Musk has faced a torrent of criticism online after announcing plans to produce his own AI-generated adaptation of The Odyssey.
On Wednesday, July 22, the trillionaire reshared a scene from Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (2026) and stated, "Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer." Grok Imagine is a specialized AI image and video generation platform built into X (formerly Twitter).
Following the announcement, numerous users expressed outrage that Elon would propose using AI to recreate the ancient Greek epic poem. The controversy emerges as a recent lawsuit claims that Elon's data center is releasing cancer-linked substances into communities in Mississippi.

In the replies to Elon's post, critics flooded the comments, urging him to abandon the unnecessary endeavor.
One commenter stated, "No thanks. The people want real actors. Use AI to help humanity, not entertain us. Also, humans are allowed to have their own take on a story if it's not a historical fact. It's the fun part about being different."
Another user questioned, "Historically accurate? You're aware it's a mythological poem, right?"
A third critic remarked, "This is SO delusional and one of those many moments where I question everything about Elon. The whole point of why the Odyssey is doing great (against Elon's predictions! ) is not the story!"
The user elaborated, "It is the magnificent HUMAN filmmaking! Its success is in part a REJECTION of AI/technology! Plus, in my experience, @grok Imagine, at least what is publicly available, sucks and is just not capable of this."
Another person wrote, "My god, I can't think of anything more horrible than AI creating a movie version of The Odyssey. You rant and rave about integrity to the original source: a beautiful human creation, and then you take all humanity out of the equation. F--k you!"
Elon's post comes as Nolan's production The Odyssey debuted in cinemas nationwide on July 17. In stark contrast to Elon's proposal, Nolan prides himself on never using AI technology and rarely using CGI effects in his projects.
The majority of sequences in the production were brought to life through the use of elaborate prosthetics, daring stunts, and real-life scenery.
The Odyssey (2026) additionally showcases some of Hollywood's finest performers including Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and numerous others.
To date, the production has received enthusiastic praise from viewers, with the action fantasy picture achieving an outstanding Rotten Tomatoes rating of 94% on the Tomatometer and 97% on the Popcornmeter. The Odyssey generated $264 million in box office revenue during its opening weekend, with $6.1 million coming from IMAX 70mm screenings alone.
The film's production budget was estimated at $250 million. An additional $125 million was allocated for worldwide marketing efforts, making it the most costly project in Nolan's extensive career.
