Tech billionaire Elon Musk has announced plans to create his own AI version of Homer's ancient epic. The declaration seems to have come as a direct challenge to Christopher Nolan's recently released The Odyssey, which Musk has criticized for months.
Elon Musk vows to remake The Odyssey with AI
Musk revealed his cinematic ambitions on X (formerly Twitter) on Tuesday evening, responding to a user who posted AI-generated footage of a The Odyssey scene. "Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer," he wrote. Musk offered no further details on the venture.
This appears to be an escalation in Musk's public feud with Nolan's film. In January, he declared that Chris Nolan had “lost his integrity" after a social media post labelled the casting of Lupita Nyong'o as Helen of Troy "an insult to the author" (via Deadline). Musk doubled down in May when conservative commentator Matt Walsh suggested Nolan only cast Nyong'o to avoid being called racist (via BBC). Musk replied with, "True."
He later applauded a transphobic rumor targeting actor Elliot Page, who plays Sinon in Nolan's adaptation, calling the post a "banger" (via Entertainment Weekly). Nolan's film has proven immune to the criticism. The star-studded epic, featuring Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson and Zendaya, opened to $264 million globally and has received widespread critical acclaim.
Musk is down to have Mel Gibson direct a $100 million Odyssey remake
Beyond AI, Elon Musk entertained a separate proposition from a fan urging him to fund a live-action adaptation of The Odyssey. The user suggested giving "Mel Gibson $100 million to film an Odyssey adaptation with painstakingly historically accurate ships, armour, weapons, and casting, with all dialogue taken straight from the original poem and delivered in Homeric Greek."
Musk responded simply that he was "down" with the idea. Whether either project materializes remains unclear. Neither Gibson nor representatives for Musk have publicly commented on it.
