Elon Musk has been hit with a wave of online hate after declaring he plans to create his own version of The Odyssey using AI.
On Wednesday, July 22, the trillionaire reposted a scene from Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (2026) along with the caption, "Before this year ends, Grok Imagine will make a full-length movie of The Odyssey that is historically accurate and true to the art of Homer." Grok Imagine is a dedicated AI image and video generation platform that is integrated into X (formerly Twitter).
After the declaration, many took to the replies, outraged that Elon would even suggest using AI to adapt the historic, mythological Greek poem. This comes as a new lawsuit alleges that Elon's data center is pumping cancer-linked chemicals into neighborhoods in Mississippi.

In response to Elon's post, many critics took to the comment section begging him not to embark on the needless project. One person wrote, "No thanks. The people want real actors. Use AI to help humanity, not entertain us. Also, humans are allowed to have their own take on a story if it's not a historical fact. It's the fun part about being different."
Another person asked, "Historically accurate? You’re aware it’s a mythological poem, right?"
While a third critic chimed in, "This is SO delusional and one of those many moments where I question everything about Elon. The whole point of why the Odyssey is doing great (against Elon’s predictions!) is not the story!"
The user continued, "It is the magnificent HUMAN filmmaking! Its success is in part a REJECTION of AI/technology! Plus, in my experience, @grok Imagine, at least what is publicly available, sucks and is just not capable of this."
Someone else posted, "My god, I can’t think of anything more horrible than AI creating a movie version of The Odyssey. You rant and rave about integrity to the original source: a beautiful human creation, and then you take all humanity out of the equation. F--k you!"
Elon's post comes as Nolan's film The Odyssey premiered in theaters everywhere on July 17. Unlike Elon's, Nolan's work prides itself on never using AI technology and rarely using CGI effects. The majority of the film's scenes were brought to life through elaborate prosthetics, daring stunts, and real-life locations.
The Odyssey (2026) also features some of Hollywood's most talented actors, including Matt Damon, Zendaya, Tom Holland, Anne Hathaway, Robert Pattinson, and many others.
So far, the movie has been met with rave reviews from audiences, with the action fantasy film racking up an impressive score on Rotten Tomatoes: 94% on the Tomatometer and 97% on the Popcornmeter.
The Odyssey made $264 million at the box office during opening weekend, and $6.1 million from IMAX 70mm alone. The film was estimated to cost $250 million to make. An additional $125 million was spent on global marketing for the movie, making it the most expensive project of Nolan's lengthy career.
